Flowers for part sun areas?

I have some that over-wintered in the ground (did I say that right?), so I suspect they are dead - will get more because shade loving plants are the only ones that will grow on the shady side of the house. So far only the Hosta plants have started growing back on that side.

I'm pretty sure your caladiums are dead. I've slipped up and left mine in too long (first frost will kill them) and have had no luck with them coming back the next year. I believe their minimum temperature is around 40 degrees. So even storing them you have to be careful. It's so easy to store them - when the weather starts getting cold, I just yank 'em out and knock the dirt off of them and put them in a garbage bag with some of paper I've saved from shredding bills. I make sure that it's dry before closing up the bag; not usually a big concern from my caldium bed.

I'd love to have hostas, but the deer think that's some sort of gourmet salad, so I don't have them. Considering there were 12 deer bedded down in the backyard last night, I'm obviously feeding them something - I just haven't figured out what.

As for plants knowing day/afternoon sun, I think they must because my morning glories really only do bloom in the morning, no matter what kind of sun they get. And if I remember correctly from my father's garden, there are also 12 o'clocks and 4 o'clock flowers that bloom - you got it - at noon and late afternoon. :)
