Here's my suggestion for surviving the gas prices: Go shop around for a cheap, used, 1980 something, used car that gets 40+ or so MPG. They are sitting around everywhere and you can usually get them for about $500, especially if they need a little work (brakes, tune-ups, coils, etc.) Put another $500 or so into fixing them up and drive them to work over long distances rather than your SUV or low-milage car, and save those vehicles for when you need to move kids, groceries, etc.

Then when the prices come back down for the 2006 elections you can sell the car to some kid for $800 or so and you've saved hundreds if you're driving a lot.

That is what we did.

We have a 1989 Chevy we call the ummm  "beater car" and it cost about $750 to get it on the road. Runs great, gets great gas miliage, and since it has power nothing, it is fairly easy to work on.

That would be 80 miles to Rockville ONE WAY.
I transcribed it wrong. I wrote 80 and meant 160.

I meant to write it as 160/15=10.66

that typo being corrected my math is still correct.

Pete, I don't know for sure about MD a year ago, but when I left in April 2004 gas was at $1.67 or so a gallon, and on the way up. I don't see how you could use a baseline cost of $1.36???
He said it cost him $25 more to fill up. Not knowing the exact cost back in Aug 2004 I had to calculate that this way.

IF
22gal X 2.50 = 55

THEN

22gal X (X) = $30

SO to solve for X

22gal X (X) = $30
22.................22 divide both sides by 22 to isolate (X)

which gives you

(X) = 30/22 or (X) = $1.36363636

I originally wrote

80/15= 10.66 gal which is obviously incorrect check it. 80/15mpg is actually 5.33 gal

When I did the math I doubled the 80 in my head and did the math as 160/15= 10.66 which is correct. The result was correct, I simply transcribed the wrong dividend from paper to screen.

My calculations were correct. Trust me I have a high math IQ

I glanced at your 80 mile typo, figuring you based this on 80 miles and not 160 miles, since the trip was twice that, figured everything had to be doubled.

I didn't look at the math which is correct as you said.

Re did it with Mikes numbers.

$1.60 X 25gal = $40 (Adjusted to reflect actual)

Today

$2.60 X 25gal = $65

80 miles from here to Rockville- 160 Round trip

160/11mpg = 14.54gal per day (11MPG? You have a Dodge don't you? Can you say Hemi? :lmao:

25gal tank / 14.54gal per day = 1.71 trips per tank

5 days per week / 1.71 trips per tank = 2.92 fill ups per week

$40 fill up X 2.92 fill ups per week = $116.80 per week cost X 4 weeks =$467.20

Today

$65 fill up X 2.92 fill ups per week = $189.80 per week cost X 4 weeks =$ 759.20

Cost now $759.20 – Cost 1 year ago $467.20 = $292.00 more cost now per month than 1 year ago.

Double check it this way

1.60/2.60 = 61.5%

467.20/759.20= 61.5%

They match meaning if the price of gas has increased 61.5% in a year, you cost for driving the same distance has increased 61.5%. $467.20 + 61.53846% = 759.20 roughly

Why you want to stack the deck against Pete like that? Unless you mean a spell-off between him and Larry :jet:
I fear even Larry could beat me in a spell off. I admit my failings. :howdy:

Mmmm...I don't know about that.

But we could try and see! He's busy with gerber calculations right now but I'll post a tread tomorrow or something.
