For or against tariffs?

Personally I am for equal tariffs, hard to say what is equivalent though.

I think playing a game of chicken with them is going to kill the short term economy though.

I think equal tariffs are fair and am happy to make a face at anyone who says they aren't. Punitive tariffs....depends. Trump isn't asking for the sun and the moon from Canada, just that they secure their border, which they should be doing anyway. In my mind Canada is being the douche, not Trump.

We need to stop relying on other countries, especially hostile nations, for our stuff. That was NEVER a terrific idea, it was put in place by the overlords so they could take their cut. We need to be energy independent, and we need to be food independent.

Agreed, but I'm not sure how we equate say a 300% tariff on our milk to the equivalent one on say their maple syrup or whatever is is we get from Canada. Do we go same percentage or try to match the dollar amount?

Unfortunately, we do not live in the early 1900s anymore. The days of people willing to put in a hard days work for an honest wage are LONG gone. To be truly 'independent' would require today's workforce to get out into the fields, into the roughneck business, into the hands dirty business, etc. for a wage commensurate with the work being performed and the skill level they bring to the table. NOT gonna happen today.

So.. how do we fix this? There is no simple answer or solution.

I'm guessing for Canada the idea is for Canadians to buy local and not US milk. Not sure how they're fixed for cows in Canada, so that's either a good deal or a stupid deal, depending. I have a sense that they don't have a lot of agriculture in Canada just because of the climate but I could be wrong. So jacking up the price of milk or making it scarce seems like the work of Commie overlords.

But I really don't know exactly how it works and I'm happy to get an education. 🤷‍♀️

And yet *somebody* is farming if we can not only feed ourselves but send food to other countries.

You know, you guys who live in rural areas see small farms, but if you head west you see serious commercial farms because they have the land for it.

Me either, but I do know that something like 90% of Canadas population lives farther south than the northern most point in Maine.

I'm for equal tariffs. I'm also all about the USA being food and energy independent. What the hell does Canada have to eat or drink that we dont here? Honestly, I always thought the USA supplied food to other countries, like we were supposed to feed the world. Also, lets bring back making automobile parts in this country and airplane parts, fighter jet parts, etc. It's ridiculous that we depend on some other country, who may or may not like us or agree with our politics, for our military parts and components.

I feel like simpler is better. The more complicated something is, the more that can go wrong and the more it's susceptible to fraud and corruption, which is almost certainly why the overlords set it up this way.

I'm thinking that's difficult because we import what we don't have and vice versa, does lumber from Canada equal fresh produce from the US. Anyway glad I don't have to figure it out and hope we see eye to eye and have true free trade with places that have roughly equal employee pay.

Nope. Not even gonna try. She knows everything already.

But I will say this for the class .... tariffs level the field and are protectionist in nature. Protectionist in the form of encouraging sales of manufactured and produced items here in the US. And stops the dumping of cheaper made products that harm our businesses. Trump's actions will make the phrases, "Buy American Made" and "Made in the USA" proud to be said once again.
