Electric vehicles are exploding from water damage after Hurricane Ian, top Florida official warns

A top Florida state official warned Thursday that firefighters have battled a number of fires caused by electric vehicle (EV) batteries waterlogged from Hurricane Ian.

EV batteries that have been waterlogged in the wake of the hurricane are at risk of corrosion, which could lead to unexpected fires, according to Jimmy Patronis, the state's top financial officer and fire marshal.

"There’s a ton of EVs disabled from Ian. As those batteries corrode, fires start," Patronis tweeted Thursday. "That’s a new challenge that our firefighters haven’t faced before. At least on this kind of scale."
So how many is a number? One is a number. And in the article that's all they point to is one. And how many is a ton? I mean one EV is probably a couple of tons. I mean EV aren't perfect but b******* articles like this with no real facts to go on serve no purpose.

Brings up an interesting thought..... when roads are flooded, there's always those idiots that forge the river and submerge their car up to the windows just to get to the other side. They'll think, well, since there's no way I can get water in my fuel or in my engine, what's to stop me from pushing an EV thru? It's all 'sealed', right?

Might need to re-think that logic.

Saw a tv show called "American Restoration" where the shell of this Bond car was found abandoned, and restored to a static display.
I was watching something similar that pointed out the Smokey and The Bandit Semi-Truck being used as an abandoned rig in Walking Dead.

This is another real question:

Could you go one year without using fossil fuels of any kind? Forget plastic and things of that nature, could you go a year without using any gas or oil to fuel/power your life?

I ask because you seem to be more on top of it than most people, plus I know you to be someone who thinks about things and plans for the future. Most people aren't like that - knock out the electricity for a couple of days and they're completely helpless. So could you, Sneakers, go one year right now without any oil or gas?
This has the makings of a GREAT reality TV show. Get Morgan Spurlock and call it "Electrify Me."
The guy has to live completely without fossil fuels for 6 months.

So you think the Florida State chief fire marshal and financial officer is less knowledgable about EV fires than you. Didn't know we had THE expert here to enlighten us. Maybe you can go on down there and show them how to safely handle their submerged EV batteries instead of calling their press releases b******* articles.

Sadly, folks in leadership positions can be out of touch with deckplate reality. He can talk about many, but all we see is one. I've seen many articles quoting folks who should know better about EVs spouting bullshit. Many many EVs have been involved in floods, if there were a huge risk of those combusting, we would know. Like the BS about Tesla's running down children. Simply hasn't happened.

BIG difference between a freshwater flood vs. a saltwater flood on anything electric!

Unless every single component, connector, wire, etc.... meets IP67 standards or better, it's not immune from corrosion. And it would significantly add to the cost of the car.

Right, but will that corrosion cause spontaneous battery fires? I say not.

I don't have enough info to say yes or no, but one of the solar websites I frequent have batteries blowing up for the smallest and stupidest of reasons. One big reason is slight corrosion or high resistance on the battery terminal cables which gets very hot under load, and causes meltdowns. Not so much the battery itself, but the connection points. Under 'normal' conditions, those points are not waterproofed for submersion in salt water.
