Maybe I should post this in the political section of the forums, as it seems a fairly obvious bit of campaigning by Bohanan. But it actually does relate to real life for many of us, so here it is...

There will be a community meeting this Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 6:00pm at the Great Mills High School media center. In attendance will be Delegate John Bohanan, a representative from the State Highway Administration, and local county commissioners. They wish to discuss with us the traffic problems at the intersection of Rt. 5 and Great Mills Road. The subject of a new walkway for our students who walk to Great Mills High is also a topic of interest to many of us. Please consider attending this meeting to voice your concerns with our local officials. Hope to see you there.

Spend that non existent money Johnny Boh! Oh wait, the gas tax goes up another 3.5 cents in January, so we'll get the money from the transportation fund.

Typical pre-election pandering. Seems like Steny's face is everywhere at the moment... kissing hands and shaking babies.

I've wondered why there were no overhead pedestrian bridges here, they were so commonplace in Michigan when I was growing up.

For that intersection, a traffic circle might work if it went clockwise instead of counter-clockwise. Heck, couldn't be any worse than it is now.

Umm...isn't there a good sidewalk there now? It runs from Rt.5 all the way up to the high school...same in the opposite direction. And the new sidewalks along Chancellor's Run Rd.. They looking to spend money where it isn't needed?

Best of both worlds, a figure eight. Now that could add some excitement. :killingme

How many other campaign stops are going to be disguised as "community " meetings

If you don't like it why don't you show up to one of the meetings, stand up, and call him out on it? Or is it easier to stay behind you computer monitor and keyboard?

and just how many "students" walk to any school in this county?
Town Creek might be the exception to the rule.
But some neuro challenged soul wants to spend several million dollars to build a walkway that might get used less than half the year for a handful of people.
Yet we ignore the traffic problems that feeds the largest single employer in the region.

I thought you were not allowed to let kids walk to school anymore. But really they need to address the intersection not some new sidewalk for for as someone else said a few individuals.

I live in the neighborhood. You are apparently unaware of the real problem, our interests in fixing it, and the scope of the proposed solutions. Please allow me to shed some light on the subject.

There are many dozens of teens in the neighborhood who attend GMHS, and it's a very close walk. Having walking access to the school lightens the load on public school bus transportation and reduces automobile traffic during both rush hours - it's potentially an inexpensive improvement to the overall Great Mills intersection problems.

However there are two problems. One, a few years ago the school administration fenced the entire GHMS sports field complex, cutting off access to the school from the previous walkway. Two, there IS a Metcom right of way that accesses the Great Mills pool, from which it's easy to reach the school. But it runs between two residents' yards, and is only a few feet wide; understandably those residents are very unhappy about the passthru traffic and damage to their property, both by residents' teenagers but also the truancy traffic all day long. They have a right to some protection. So the Bay Ridge residents are not looking for millions of dollars of sidewalk; most would be satisfied with a suitable opening in the fence around the sports fields, or some protective fencing along the Metcom right-of-way. In any case, this meeting was a good opportunity to show our county commissioners the problem and begin searching for a suitable and cost-effective solution.
