To what? Satellite, where I cant get internet, and whose packages are similarly priced? Still have to get net through Metrocast.

Yes

Tell them that you are dumping them for cable (and phone of you use them for that).

Folks, I don't mind paying for what I get, my issue is paying a tech $70 to come out here for no other reason than they are forcing me. The fact that they straight up lie about why he needs to come here pisses me off. Because he doesn't need to come here at all. And I hate being lied to.

If I had a choice - and because of Internet, I really don't - I would leave Metrocast in a cold second. Their equipment has been dropping programs, freezing up, requires frequent (as in daily or every other day) reboots - and to top it off - I've had VERY nasty treatment at the hands of their customer support. They charge for any home visit, no matter whose "fault" it is. I've received receipts clearly showing no charge - and received charges on my bill anyway.

To say I hate Metrocast - would be putting it mildly. What I hate almost as much is the monopoly every cable company has, everywhere. Metrocast - and other cable companies - do not need to serve their customers competitively, because they have a monopoly.

We'd go Dish or DirectTV if it weren't for Internet (which needs to be fast, because I use it for work). I've had satellite Internet, and it's awful. And I've seen no combination of Metrocast Internet and other services from our bundle that would cost
anywhere near the same.

I've had guys tell me I'm saving money by paying more.

I was screaming at the guy, "How the hell can you tell me I've saving money by paying $10 more per month"?

Sounds like Obamacare. People got booted off their insurance for more expensive insurance with higher co-pays and deductibles.

But it was "better insurance".

Anyone consider keeping internet with metrocast and then going with Dish or Direct TV?

Even if it costs a little more, it seems like it is the principle of the thing, I.e. speaking with one's pocketbook. I just hate the thought of having a stupid dish mounted on my house.

This will sound like a dumb question, but I am technically dumb about some things. I'm so fed up with paying these outrages prices for cable TV I want to research the antenna thing and just get the basic channels. So, how did that work way back when it changed over to digital and people could get a converter to pick up channels. Can anyone explain this to me? How it works, etc? TIA.

If you have a newer TV with a digital QAM tuner AND an antenna input, you can just put up an antenna and start receiving digital HD signals. Depending on where you live and what kind of antenna will depend on how many channels you can get. I've gotten upwards of 30 over-the-air channels with a less expensive antenna and a clear night. I plan on going to a full size antenna for better coverage.

If you have an older TV without the digital tuner, you can get the antenna adapter to convert the signal.

I guess this won't work for me. I'm moving into an apartment and there is no working antenna. I just hate paying Metrocast $99 to have to come out and change my service over to my new place. :cussing: I'm beginning to miss the days of rabbit ears and aluminum foil. Thanks for the info.

I did this and went with Direct TV. The dish is ugly.... but service has been good.

Well, looked over the satellite thing. The upfront introductory thing doesn't look bad. Where they get you is the fact that every TV needs a box, and they charge dear for the boxes. NO box, not even basic service. And the "free install" scares me, to be honest. No installer is going to do anywhere near the quality I would want. Staple coax outside, drill hole in wall, toss cable in, terminate, and you are done. And at myy house, the only option is on the roof, and having a guy who's barely making any money on the job screwing stuff into my $10,000 dollar roof job scares me.

If I could self install, I might think harder about it, but thats not allowed any more.

We found that if you flash a $50 at the DTV technician he will do anything you ask. Our tech used our caulk on the screws that went into the roof, tucked the wires out of sight outside, used the caulk on the hole drilled through the wall, and very neatly ran the cable through the house. We actually gave the dude a $100 and got his personal phone number for when ever we needed anything done....like adjusting the dish after a wind storm.

Still rather do it myself. I'm pretty particular about cabling :)

I'm the same way.

Ran all my cables and told the Comcast guy to just give me the box.

Not sure if it's the same anymore, but awhile ago, installers got paid per job. It's no sweat off their back if you do all the work.

But you still had to pay the cableco dollars for the tech to come out, correct? Should be able to just pick up the box and take it home. If it doesnt work, fine, I'll ask for a tech then. Thats what kills me, this insistence on sending a tech to pad the bottom line when there is nothing for the tech to do. Like when you take your car in for service to get the computer flashed, and they tack on a $10 "shop supplies" fee. That is supposed to cover rags and soap and grease and such. Well, if you only hooked a cable to my obdII port, you didn't use any rags or lube, now did you, take that charge off of there.

I've always just gone to Comcast for a box. Go to their office and ask for a box.

Only time I've ever had to have atech out was after a hard rain. It messed with their pedestal. After they changed out some RG-11 F-connectors, we were back in bidd-ness.

The days of techs coming out to install boxes are over for them, and they are leaning more on the "self install" kits.

I don't even have to call to get a refresh signal sent anymore.

Right, but when you move or upgrade service, they insist on an installer. The guy says he removed a filter, but the leafy debris around the pedestal says he didn't open it. So I paid $70 for nothing.

When I moved last year an installer never came out.

I called Comcast and said I'm moving. I picked up a box, activated my account, and was watching TV in 10 minutes.

I also got "upgraded" over the phone and no one came out.

They don't use filters anymore, so unless you've got some old system out there, you should be ok.

Dont happen like that here, check my story from when I moved last, was a damn horror story. No filters, no an excuse to send a tech out.

Read this whole thing, was a helluva trip. Had the damn tech sit in my house for over an hour, punishing me, and killed my friken router to boot.

So...if I still have my modem and little digital converter for the tv they wouldn't have to come out?
