Full time RV'ing...

...I'm doing it one way or another but, am having trouble settling on a rig.

Dirt bikes and street bikes and tools and gear are going.

The overall plan is 3-6 months at a place at a time. Set up shop, find a fund job for beer and gas money, work camp, whatever, and explore the crap out of an area then move on as the weather or mood warrants.

I want a vehicle, preferably a jeep, to use as grocery getter, exploring, off roading, bad weather transportation.

1. The BIG option is an HDT (heavy duty truck) converted to carry a smart car cross ways on the chassis between the cab and trailer (but carry the bikes in the smart car space) and tow a big ass 5th wheel toy hauler with a heavy enough frame and capacity to garage the jeep for travel thereby avoiding double towing. Several vendors will do this so, the jeep in the 'toy' space is no big deal. There is no real downside to this because the truck is big enough for the extra 5,000#'s of the jeep weight plus whatever extra weight for the trailer frame to handle it.

2. BIG option 2 is the jeep goes where the smart would have been. I've seen it done 2 ways; 1, the jeep is angled up the back of the cab (too long to fit crosswise like the smart car) and 2, a 16-18' truck body is mounted to the truck, jeep stored inside (the one I have seen, you hire a roll back to get it in and out) and tow the trailer off the back of the truck.

I like 1 better because I don't want to be dependent on outside help to get jeep in and out. The toy hauler, drop ramp and there you go.

Either one gives me a jeep, dirt bikes, a big trailer for space BUT, this enormous freaking truck that will sit, alot, 3-6 months at a time.

3. Is the new Ram 3500 or F450 dually that both can tow 30,000 and carry 7,000 so, a BIG ASS 5th wheeler/toy hauler is doable. Experienced full timers are concerned with the stopping power of this option with the HDT being the choice with the most margin for "Oh, ####!". The plus here is using the dually as the daily driver/explore vehicle; losing the jeep. Obviously, not going off road much BUT, have the choice of taking dirt bikes in the back of it for day trips and, assuming 4wd, being able to get out in the bush a ways. Also, do not need as mongo a trailer if it is holding 2,000 pounds of motorcycles and tools rather than 5,000 plus for a jeep and tools. However, 3,000#'s, maybe the heavy duty toy hauler is still the smarter choice if I get out of control and start carrying around 100 cases of beer at a time? Sucks to lose the jeep. Great to lose the HDT which would otherwise be sitting so much.

4. I ain't got no freaking 4 at this point....Talked to several people who use their HDT as their daily driver/grocery getter, and some are even rigged with bed, potty and small kitchen, they use it for weekend trips away from the trailer. But, again, not having a pick up truck would probably give me hives.

5. Is inspired by 4; the HDT is the daily driver AND short trip motor AND carry some dirt bikes for day/weekend trips.

5 is starting to smell best...

Open to suggestions...

Love it Larry...gotta say,..however tempting this is, I have a hard time finding reasonable campgrounds. Maybe budget..3 days off the grid, 4 days at a comfortable site. Wife wants a RV but if it sits in the yard 50 weeks out of the year: its a WASTE!

So...keep us posted on your progress. Get yourself certified in "Invasive species consultation & interdiction" and justify your traveling around looking for the Ash Borer & Chinese stink bugs.......spray & chat & have a few bottles of samples...get paid to wander.

Paralysis by analysis. It is good to think big, though.

Just do it, or stay on the porch.:buddies:

You're a smart fella and will figure it out. I just want to say this is exciting!

Congrats to you for starting to work on it. Next thing, get moving!

I'll see if I can dig up some pics, but here's an option that one of my wheeling/offroad buddies put together.

1. Bought a 2000-something Volvo extended sleeper tractor, loaded. Added some more RV type stuff to the sleeper cab (flat screen, computer table, microwave, etc). Removed the forward of the two rear axles and had a custom extended driveshaft and carrier bearing made. Built a low motorcycle carrying platform for each side of the truck, that extends from the rear wheel to the back of the cab. They swing outwards and have a flip down ramp for loading and unloading the scooters (he has a pair of Triumph sport bikes). So when he's underway, the bikes are tucked neatly behind the cab on each side. Truck is tagged and titled as an RV (although not by Maryland..some state out west will do that for ya).

2. Triple-axle 30-something foot enclosed trailer rides behind the Volvo. Plenty of room for his early Bronco, tools and tons of "other" stuff as well. Or sometimes he carries two early Broncos in it.

Found some pics. In the one, he's hauling his wedge instead. You can see a large storage box "riding" on one of his motorcycle trays. The other pic has his enclosed trailer behind. I forgot to mention..he custom fabbed a hard-framed awning assembly for that trailer that covers as much ground as the trailer itself and has flaps or whatever to completely close it in as a weatherproof area.

The Volvo's come up a lot in this sort of discussion. One guy says his 660 (IIRC?) turns inside an F350.

And my buddie's gets around 8 mpg reliably and as high as 10 on the wide open stretches of highway. And that with an automatic trans.. Having one rear axle probably helps that.

LOVE that idea, the bike 'tray'!

That's the thing; there are a LOT of kewl jobs that involve travel, some sort of survey/checking on things sort of work and really don't much seem to care about how you go about it.

If I recall correctly, from the initial purchase, through the mods and finally the custom paint job, he's got roughly 100 grand in the tractor/RV. Figure another 25-30 grand for a nicely equipped lightly used enclosed trailer by FeatherLite.

That's not even half what one of those RV toy haulers go for.

Yup. And there are a crap load of already converted trucks for sale for well under $50 k. New Horizon is who I am looking at for the trailer. It would be pretty kewl to have a garage that will handle whatever the hell fits in it. They are one of the noted for full timers as a lot of the rest are pretty much vacation type construction and all that that implies.

Now, if I can find someone to let me park the trailer next to their shop for, oh, 3-4 months, and work on bike lifts and such on the truck...

A recently retired couple I know took one of those jobs out west. They are being paid by BLM to move from area to area (with their RV) and perform trail and service road surveys with their Bronco that they trailer behind it. They get 15/hour for the actual time they are surveying (basically just operating a GPS tracker/logger and taking some notes) and are paid basic per diem and direct travel expenses. So basically, they are living their dream life and not costing them a dime.

I am totally digging on this. Pretty much settled on a 5th wheel toy hauler. Want the garage as extra room, tools, numerous bikes. Kegerator. It's going to be north of 20k loaded and 5k plus on the pin.

All my research says that even the mighty new f450 and ram 3500 are going to be at their limits, especially braking. MDT's seem to be more expensive and not a great deal better than the light duties. HDT's seem to be, essentially, the same road space, width, and mainly just higher up, which is good with me. Plus way more torque and braking power.

Last night, it occurred that, instead of a garage built to handle a jeep or mounting it on the truck somehow, it would be very good to have a toad vehicle that is a cord and a pin or two away from being a scout vehicle/grocery getter etc. Originally, I wanted to stay away from double towing but, ANY rig in my concept is going to be enormous so, knowing what is ahead, clearances, trees, best path, is going to be nice to be able to scout and getting a vehicle out of the garage or off the truck is going to be a process, not very quick.

So, tow it. That makes the tow vehicle versatile as a custom garage or truck mount is going to be very model specific. Plus, a Tacoma is starting to sound better than a jeep because I don't think I will be hardcore off roading with the car and a pickup means I can take the dirt bikes.

In any event, the concept has moved on to double towing...

And I LOVE your buddies motorcycle 'side' mounts. That means weekending somewhere with the truck (I've seen them with sink, toilet, fridge, bed) is possible WITH bikes on board.

Evolving...
