Gang fights & Shooting @ Gate 1 on Mother's Day

We were driving back from Outback Sunday night - took my mom to dinner for Mother's day. All 5 of us were in the suburban, talking very happily about something until we pulled up to the stop light at gate 1. At the shell station on the corner of Pegg road were about 50 kids all jumping around, all looking very much like they belonged to a gang of some kind. As we were parked there at the red we started to hear what sounded like firecrackers going off - "What is going on?" My father muttered from the front seat and we all looked on rather concerned. The light turned green and I panned my eyes across the moving crowd of people as we began to accelerate. As I tracked further and further to the left I saw a tall kid with something in his hands - it looked like a long tube. He leveled it with the crowd of kids who were scattering from the other side of the gas station. All in a matter of seconds I saw him take aim and fire. Flame shot out of the end of the gun and a cloud of smoke rose up. I remember shouting something like, "Holy crap! That was a shotgun!" My sister looked over and saw the smoke rising as we pulled out of view. A friend of mine at work passed the shell station ten minutes after we did. There were no signs of any conflict. Two hours later another friend of mine drove by and it was business as usual.

I called the Enterprise yesterday morning and they were surprised as I was when they heard about it. The news editor wasn't in both times I called and the editor himself wasn't there the second time. I also called the state police but they said they wouldn't give out any information if the event was under investigation.

I went back to the shell station yesterday, parked on the far side of the pumps. It looked like someone had cleaned up, but within about 30 seconds of searching I found an unspent bullet and then 2 shell casings.

I talked to a woman last night who's daughter is a member of the state police. Apparently a large drug deal went down this weekend and there was a lot of violence locally; what amazes me is that I haven't heard a THING about it and not even St. Mary's Today has anything to say. The drive by shooting is making the headlines right now, and this is far more disconcerting.

I'm curious if anyone else saw this occuring or has heard about it - I think this event needs the news coverage it deserves - violence of this magnitude in our town is something people need to hear about.

I once saw a helicopter land in the middle of rt 235 and chancellors, not a single word about it in the paper or on radio.

I'm more curious as to why you went back to "look" around?

Why bother? Were you armed with something to protect yourself?

If it happened once, it can certainly happen again. Next time, it might happen while you're there looking for "clues"....

Not "hating".... but the saying curiosity killed the cat does have some merit.

Too many holes in your story.... Shotguns don't shoot "bullets" and they don't "smoke". A shotgun at close range would have leveled who ever was on the receiving end, even with bird shot in it. A shotgun does not sound like a fire cracker either, it's a loud BOOM.

If there had of been a shooting of this magnatude, there would have been a crime scene established and you would have found nothing laying on the ground.

You may have seen "something" but it wasn't a shooting.

The shotgun was only fired once when in view - there were many other individuals with handguns and though I didn't see anyone firing one, the popping noise supported the fact they were there, along with the casings on the ground yesterday.

The thing that amazed me most was the fact that a crime scene was NOT established. Also, I returned during daylight hours while every single pump had a customer - no one was going to get away with anything. I would put good money on the fact that the casings are still littered around the gas station.

And no, we did not call 9-1-1 - looking back on it, it wasn't a good idea; Considering the amount of traffic present at the time I'm amazed that someone else didn't call - We were all a little numbed by what was going on at the time.

I'd also like to remind you that I SAW the gun go off. I know it's my word against the world, but there would be absolutely no point in my coming here and lying about it. I could get my kicks somewhere else.[/edit]

Maybe you should call them now - I'm sure they'd love to hear from an eyewitness.

I hope you picked them up and made sure they had fresh fingerprints on them.

YOU: "Hi, I witnessed a shooting on Sunday."
MSP: *click*

riiiiiiight
I called and said,

"We were driving by Gate 1 on Sunday night and saw people shooting at each other. I was curious if you knew anything about that or if there's someone I could talk to apart from the newspaper..."

"Sorry, if it's under investigation we can't tell you anything."

They were definitely not interested in an eyewitness account.

Their number is (301)-475-8956.

You turned yourself from potential witness to gawking rubber necker. No wonder they didn't want to talk to you.

Exactly!! You asked if they had info for you vs. telling them that you were calling to volunteer information.

Ah well. I'm just here wondering if anyone else knew about this.

Neverheard a thing about it.

Remember you are talking about St. Mary's County here...

As long as noone was killed I don't see them putting any effort (and money) into establishing a crime scene and collect evidence, and all that jazz. This is southern maryland not CSI Las Vegas.

I'm STILL waiting on my FL license plate from the Charles County po-po (my stolen bike) after I've been told they are holding it for evidence and can't release it. MAtter of fact ever since that happened I've probably left at least 8-10 messages to one officer or another. Not one call back. Not one.

And I don't blame them. They're overworked and underpaid....
