. Women didnt get the full right to vote in the UK until 1928,but we sya its a US mindset? Why dont you just say women all over the world at one time didnt have rights Larry? Its a lot closer to the truth than singling out the US. Recall that all over the world women used to not be full citizens, not just in the US.

...points out that a given societal behavior in a given nation, beating a girl for being gang raped, is not all that far from how another society used to treat something like that and it is in context of how barbaric I think most of us, including me, think they, the Saudi's, are for being that way in the year 2007, I was thinking that what would be noteworthy is the contrast between what we used to be and what we are today.

Instead you seem to have read that I am saying we are just like them, which I did not say in any way, shape or form. I am, of course, assuming your reaction to them beating a girl for the crime of being gang raped is one of 'How can that be in this day and age?'

Have actually been to that area of Saudi. Very old history there. We had phillipino worker that got 20 lashes for sitting in a vehicle with a woman not his wife. They were eating burgers and got caught by the Matawah. They are the religious police in place to enforce Islamic law. Typically Shiite(SP) Muslims who are akin to the die hard born again christian types.
And to think, the religous right in this country would like us to go in this direction.

I don't think...

You speak as though this mindset is common to the US alone larry.

...that mind set is common in the US at all. I said it used to be.

Society beating a girl for being gang raped; bad.

Privately slapping her upside the head for being so stupid as to be alone with a bunch of boys; good.

If one of our girls got gang raped and had been alone with a hoard of boys I would feel like we had done a poor job of raising her. Being guilty of being stupid is one thing. Gang raping someone is another.

Let me know if I am still communicating poorly.

That's not...

...fair. To use a religious position, as a CHOICE for a person to participate in, to make the case for fidelity, abstinence and responsible behavior as a belief system, a way of life, is a damn site different than what Muslim fundamentalists want; requirement. Wanting the right to pray in public is not the same as wanting to whip girls for being gang raped.

It's a fine to make an argument that it is of a kind but it is a vast degree of difference. In our nation, 'requirement' is a word used far more by our so called left than the religious right.

Maybe I should've said extreme religious right and like or not, fair or not, there are those who, if given their way, would have the thought police out there and the govt in our bedrooms.

...is why we have a constitution and why we constantly strive to live up to it and lack of a good constitution and bill of rights is part of what is wrong with places like Saudi.

Wahhabism is a radicalized Sunni version of Islam. Saudis and Shiites (mostly Iranians) don't get along at all. Goes along with the centuries old Arab/Persian grudge match.

Problem is, there are those on the far Religious Right who believe their way is the only right way, and therefor don't see anything wrong with forcing us to conform to their beliefs. After all, they are trying to lead us to salvation thru Jesus (their version) because they honestly believe it's their duty. That is what I observed being amongst their camp. Nothing like being responsible for your neighbors eternal soul to motivate someone.

I understand this girl went against her culture by being in the car with strange men but does anybody know WHY she was in the vehicle in the first place or is that too irrelevant to even be considered? Did I miss that part?

A court in the ultra-conservative kingdom of Saudi Arabia is punishing a female victim of gang rape with 200 lashes and six months in jail, a newspaper reported on Thursday.
The 19-year-old woman -- whose six armed attackers have been sentenced to jail terms -- was initially ordered to undergo 90 lashes for "being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape," the Arab News reported.

But in a new verdict issued after Saudi Arabia's Higher Judicial Council ordered a retrial, the court in the eastern town of Al-Qatif more than doubled the number of lashes to 200.

A court source told the English-language Arab News that the judges had decided to punish the woman further for "her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media."

Saudi Arabia enforces a strict Islamic doctrine known as Wahhabism and forbids unrelated men and women from associating with each other, bans women from driving and forces them to cover head-to-toe in public. LINK

Just keep repeating "all cultures are equal, all cultures are equal..."
Out of respect for the wishes of our lovely board mommy, I will refrain from commenting.

Doesn't seem Christian
but a rape victim in the us would still be able to marry without that stigmatism over her for the rest of her life

First she gets raped, now she has a stigmatism...this girl can't get a break. Hopefully she has a good eye care plan.

And those on the far left that believe ANYTHING goes (ACLU defending NAMBLA, etc.). Larry's right, that's why it's good we have laws and a bulk of decent citizens to intervene.

Didn't they also defend Rush Limbaugh?
I'd be shocked if they did, but I suppose they could have.

I was meaning in reference to sexual activities, though, that's why I specified NAMBLA. The ACLU's list of things they've gone after against Christianity (not religion, Christianity) is long, but that was the first sexual one that came to mind, as it is both homosexual and pedophilia.

The ACLU didn’t actually defend him what they did was file a "friend of the court" brief on behalf of Limbaugh because law enforcement didn't follow the law before subpoenaing his medical records. The organization stated that its interest in the case was ""to vindicate every Floridian's fundamental right to privacy by ensuring that the state be required to comply"" with the law.
