IMO the hack had nothing to do with the pipeline not working.
The company shut down the pipeline because the computers could not tell them where the gas came from and where it was going.
Therefore they could not charge for the pumping nor send it where it was supposed to go.
Really? I think it took down a bunch of HR systems, but the threat of the pipeline being affected would be catastrophic, so since they didn’t know the full risk they erred on the side of caution…probably not thinking most folks would hear the news and completely freak out.
I’ve seen people post “well if they were just clear about the risk it wouldn’t have caused a run on gas”
I don’t think the company thought it was a crisis, the pipeline has been shut down in the past for maintenance and there was limited impact, I’m guessing they wanted to keep it quiet, pay the fee (which is nuts and why we have to decide as a country to kill crypto) and then restart the pipeline.
but since there is no real crisis the media is always hunting, so it was a perfect storm.
the thing that kills me is Florida, about 10% of their gas comes from the pipeline, but nearly half of their stations ran out, not sure what we are going to do about that state. Lovely to visit, but terrifying to stay.
