Getting published

Anyone ever had anything they've written published? I sent my manuscript to my brother who is involved in the publishing world, but it's been on his desk for almost a year now buried under other more important things :bigwhoop:. He promised me at Christmas he will look at it when he gets back.

But I'd like to start looking around on my own and I have no clue where to start. Google is overwhemling.

Boy, this could get interesting...

I sent him an e-mail this morning to poke him.

A lot of people have read my stuff and said I should send it off.... One of my new year promises will be to take action instead of saying "yeah someday"

My brother isn't a publisher, he writes, and had experience as an editor. But I really shouldn't rely on anyone but myself :ohwell:

What type of book is it? One of the first things you should do is determine the niche that your book fits into and research publishers who publish that type of book. From there, you can read what their submission guidelines are and determine what your next step needs to be. I was the managing editor of a publishing company until recently and can give you some direction if you would like.

I'd try asking your brother for guidance during an over the phone or in person convo, rather than waiting for him to get around to it. If he can give you some guidance on where to start, that could work. Otherwise, I'd just pick a few publishers that put out books that match the same genre yours does, and send it to them, see if you get any hits. Fair warning though, I've been told it can take months to hear anything back if you hear anything at all. Also, always keep a nice hard copy and multiple soft copies of your manuscript, because the condition the manuscript you sent off will come back in probably wont be good(if they send it back at all)

There is a writing workshop in Prince Frederick at the library in January. I think it's just the boost that I need right now, so I'm going to attend.

After the workshop I'm going to the shelves to get the "Writers Market" Which will help me pick a few publishers.

Any chance you can share the info on when/where the workshop is happening? I'm a writer as well and my one new years resolution is to actually try to FINISH something I start writing and see if I can get it published.

I can get that kind of publishing done at staples too. I'm looking at a bigger picture than self publishing.

I know you're looking for something other than self publishing, but there is this option as well

Self Publishing - Lulu.com

This site let's you publish in paperback or hardback in various sizes, assigns your book an ISBN and i believe you can also have it listed on amazon.

Thanks for the info. That will come in handy for another project I have been working on.

Well I attended the writers group yesterday. It was awesome and inspiring. I intend to go back. Its exactly what I needed to get on the right path.
Of course after being around real talent I see how much work my own writing needs,
