Well I told you I would give you speed tests and here they are.

3.8Mbps down
216 Kbps Up

Not too bad for right after people get out of work :p

Metrocast.. 7:27PM

The BEST I got was 930k download, 350 upload.

The other ten times I tested it tonight I was getting about 260K DL, 350 ul.

THAT sucks, since we pay extra for the 4Mbs service

I hear it depends how many users are on your DSL network in your local community, but I average between 2.3 and 2.9 megs for downloads.

Uploads always seem to around 350 to 450 kps. Slower, I know, but it still beats dial-up!

I switched to DSL not too long ago. I was having so many problems with the signal going down. The cable company had been out many times to fix the issues but as a neighborhood, our cable went out an awful lot.

I only pay $14.95 with the phone company compared to $39.99 with the cable company and I notice no difference in speed what so ever.

Heh jerk off... I didnt give you any negative comments/Karma. Merely posted my opinion on a thread.

You such a damn smart ass know it all to everyone here, I would'nt be surprised if someone nerfed your "karma". But that someone wasnt me.... and I really dont appreciate you pointing your finger at me without any facts to back it up.

If your life revolves around KARMA points on on some local forum...you need need to 1) Get a fooking life and 2) go see a shrink becuase you have some serious acceptance issues.

Edit: Actually I just gave you some Negative love AND put my name to it... becuase your a dipshit. I like how you accuse me but have no proof... if you want more negative karma just let me know I will BE HAPPY to.

If you ever want to REALLY talk PC and Networking without being an ass, let me know. I will be happy to educate you.

EDIT 2: Even funnier is I just read the forum rules for Karma and "New members will start off with 10 points and must make 50 posts before their karma hits count. Newbies can still give karma to other members, leave comments and rack up karma themselves from other members, but they won't be giving or taking points."

So I think that means I COULDNT have hit your Karma due to the fact I have less than 50 posts.

Penn..speed with DSL is limited by 1) how far from the CO you are (central office), 2) the quality of your connection and wiring and 3) the load AFTER your data goes past the CO and into the backbone...if DC's backbone is messed up/overcorwded then your connection will go slower, as well as everyone else in the DC area that use that backbone.

Its cable that suffers speed drops when companies like metrocast overload the people connecting to the routers within thier office, or overloads the local nodes (what connects you and your neighbors to the routers in the cable office).

Im sure SAHARB will say Im wrong, being as she invented the internet (or was that Al Gore?). And Im sure she will have nothing to back her claims up but her "expert opinion". :lalala:

Get with the program fukcwad. It has already been determined that I knew not of what I posted. I know nothing about computers, and never claimed otherwise. I misunderstood what an icon on my monitor was showing me. What I thought was connection speed was actually the speed of my computer talking to my modem or some such thing. I have no idea. Cholo knows what it was, he told me in a different thread. If you were to find that thread, you would also see where I posted what my actual speeds are after checking via an online site.

I feel your frustration with TROLLS huntr1, dont lead Sarahb get to you.

Like I posted in another thread, here is something useful that explains the different units of measurement for bandwidth speeds. Unlike some people, Ill post something that HELPS people, instead of pounding my chest and inflating my superiority complex by demeaning people.

You will often see bandwidth and transfer speed quoted in two different units: kilobits per second, abbreviated kbps or Kb/s, and kilobytes per second, abbreviated KB/s. The difference between the two units is the number of bits in a byte, which is 8. The small 'b' stands for bits, and the big 'B' stands for bytes. Transfer speeds are often shown in KB/s, and connect speeds are usually quoted in Kb/s.

So, for instance, if a progress dialog for a modem shows you a download speed of 4.3 KB/s, it is the same as 34.4 Kb/s. If a progress dialog for a cable modem shows you a transfer speed of 100 KB/s, it is the same as 800 Kb/s.

We display our measured transfer speeds in Kb/s, to make them easier to compare with your rated line speed.

Thanks for the reply. What I posted is what someone else, (who seemed to know what they were talking about) told me.

This may be dumb, but what does a "central office" look like? Right around the middle or end of August, I noticed a 2 foot green, maybe 8 inch square pedestal at the edge of our housing area. One day, as I came around to check my mailbox, there it was!

First thing I noticed, my dial-up speeds increased from 44kps to nearly 50 - 52kps! Then, I get an e-mail from Verizon saying I was now eligible for DSL.
Ordered it that night, and got online the next week, when the equipment arrived.

Is that new pedestal it?(the CO)

I wouldnt think so (but IM not 100% sure). What may have happend is they replaced some of the equpiment that your phones lines connected to, and it gave you less "noise" on your phone line, and better speed due to cleaner lines.

A DSLAM (especially a full size one) is A LOT bigger than 2 ft X 8"...

Check this out for more than you ever want to know about DSL
How Does DSL Work

And this NEAT article about some people that put in thier OWN CO (with DSLAM).... HUmm wonder is places that Greenbriar with all the people that live in that neighborhood could do this :)

Oh goodie...more infantile name calling. Can I play? :lmao:

Ok..funny how you wont admit you were wrong about me nerfing your "karma" when there is no way I could. Lets try this again, and I quote from the Karma FAQ on this board.

"New members will start off with 10 points and must make 50 posts before their karma hits count. Newbies can still give karma to other members, leave comments and rack up karma themselves from other members, but they won't be giving or taking points."

I know its hard for someone as perfect as you ..... but admit it. You accused me wrongly. I didnt call you names, nor was I a jerk to you (well I guess saying what you said was BS, and wanting to sell you ocean front property in Az was wrong). Your the one that throws the names around, and your the one with the attitude. I just shoot back what I get.

Oh and this, I assume, is from you in my Karma (cant tell because the person didnt have the guts to sign it)..

"If your going to be a #####, at least sign your karma comments. dont be mad because of your own IDIOTIC Statements Boo Hoo Hoo "

Looks like some pretty aggressive comments here... you want to join me it the TeePee of love on Brokeback Moutain

1) Practice what you preach o' wise one.

2) How many friends do you have here? None...because of your attitude

3) there is more to life than Karma

4) The Al Gore giving you red karma comment was pretty funny :lmao:

I just moved into Greenbrier down here in Lexington Park last week and Metrocrap just came out here to install my Internet / cable today. I am currently downloading the new VMware update at a blazing.... 15k/sec.

This is freaking ridiculous..... Is there not anything we can do as a whole to get this crap fixed?

Afraid not.... being as Metro is the only game in town and they know it. As Sharab would say, we signed an agreement where the fine print said they do not gaurentee down/upload speeds. But just because the contract says so, doesnt make it good business to give your customers less than 10% of the speed they advertised.

The only thing we can do as a whole is call those bastards up EVERY DAY and complain. Or even more drastic CANCEL our internet accounts and Call them everyday to see if it has been fixed.

Did you check into DSL??

I could have gotten high speed internet from GMP a long time ago. But, I learned that they were making you subscribe first to their basic cable TV service, then they required you to also purchase the extended basic service.

THEN they could piggyback the cable internet on with all that.

All those services came to around $84.00 a month. No effen way am I going to pay that kind of money, so I stayed with Earthlink dial-up for another year.

Then Metrocast bought out GMP, I heard, and prices came down dramatically.

It's around $39.99 a month now, and you do not have to have their TV cable service to get high speed internet.(as long as your home is cable-wired already)

Point is, I'm surprised someone has not taken GMP to court for charging so much $$$ for the service.

When DSL came available for my community, it was a simple choice.

I love 'em!
