Goodbye, Chesapeake Hills clubhouse

If I may ...
If I may ...

All the talk of air pollution. Water pollution. The poisons emitted. And here is government openly and willfully burning a building down. Just to save a few dollars instead of having a crew come in and either demolish it, tear down, or dissemble to save and reuse what good woods are available. Or, to just rehab the building. But no. Now the County will spend nearly $4,000,000, or more, of borrowed money adding to the millions and millions and millions already spent on a failing un-profitable enterprise. Calvert voters are idiots.

The burn was a training exercise for the fire peeps.

But you bring up a point that I've been interested in for years: why doesn't that golf course make money? Other golf places are profitable, why not Chesapeake Hills? Granted, the course needs some TLC but there's no reason why they couldn't pick up business from area golfers who end up at Pax River or the courses up in PG.

Probably for reasons similar to the chronic financial struggles of the Wicomico Shores gold course....said difficulties how it became county property in the first place.

Yep. We've got an old structure on the island, sitting at the water's edge, that is eventually going to be control-burned as a training exercise for the fireboat crew and the mobile brush-fire team.

I've seen at least three done just in Hollywood, usually for revolting eyesores - in prime locations.

Training? There was no training going on. They just sat or stood and watched while it burned. The only reason they were there was to ensure the fire didn't spread to other areas. I watched it for a bit, stopped, while driving by. They were standing around watching. That's it. When all was said and done, all apparatus left with just a small contingent to watch the smoldering piles before all was put out. Training? Ha.

But what are those reasons? I don't understand why Wicomico would struggle financially.

Family I know just sold their course in PG. If you went there, you would have thought they were extremely profitable, owing to the fact that the course was always packed and the clubhouse bar always full on weekends with folks watching whatever sporting event was going on. Their pricing was on a par with most area courses as was their food and beverages. Upkeep, material, labor etc has escalated so much that, without large price increases, breaking even was a tough nut to crack. I talked to one of the owners last month and he said it was either sell or go bankrupt.

There is a technique involved. I saw it on display when our house burned down.
I watched it happen myself with Mrs Morgans home down Parlett Morgan rd 10 yrs ago or so. It started as a stove fire in a closed door kitchen and it stayed contained and could have been put out with a garden hose until they vented the roof / ceiling and couldn't get the pumper truck to pull water out of the river the house sits on. Sat there with Ernest and Bubba and watched it get gutted.

I can understand easily. Everyone that looked upon Swann's sprawling and diverse complex figured it had to be a gold mine too. It was far from that. Fixed overhead costs were huge and relentlessly constant while income was fickle and sporadic. Bad weather on any summer weekend could mean the difference between making 10K profit that month, or losing 3K...chit like that.

What do you know about the training? There are many facets to a "controlled burn". You might even learn a lot if you went in and volunteered to serve. The county is always looking for more volunteers!

I know 2 people that volunteer in 2 different squads. After listening to them vent about the drama, laziness of the old-timers, and the fact that changing anything in those departments to make them better requires a vote which usually gets shot down my the majority (the people who have been there for 30 years.. do nothing really... and only participate for the tax write off)

Dump your millennial friends. They are whiners who think they know everything. Problem solved.
