Got a question for you bikers

As I was driving home (in my car) last night on Rt. 5, I was in the far left lane and there was this big truck in the far right lane. As all big trucks seem to do, it was spitting gravel out its back, and over the course of about 30 seconds, across 3 lanes of traffic and until I passed it, my car was getting rittled with gravel.

I started to wonder about motorcyclists....

Doesn't that hurt like ####? I mean, some of this #### breaks glass, I can only imagine what would happen if one of these nailed you in the head.

Any experience with this?

That's why I wear a full face helmet. I've had rocks hit the shield and thought to myself, "damn, that would have hurt!"

and even the littlest fairing helps a lot!

I got peppered by a truck doing just that on I-95.. I only felt it from my knees down.

Oh yeah! It hurts! Even a bug hurts when it's slammed up into your face when your riding 60 or more mph. My husband rides a Harley. I am only the passenger. But I was hit in the face by a bug, and that stung like H*ll! Ouch!

Even so, can't you take one to the chest? Wouldn't that screw you pretty hard?

Fairing with a small windshield should prevent it.. SHOULD hit it and bounce it over your head.. or into your hemet.

Only thing closely related was getting hit by a bat in the chest.. but it flew down into me, not coming up from the road.

Riding jacket protects the chest/arms. Riding pants protect the legs. Boots protect the feet. Gloves protect the hands. Are you getting the idea yet?

Got a question for you... 02-05-2008 04:18 PM panzy

Idiot

BTW, it's also quite ironic that someone would call me a "panzy" [sic] using unsigned karma

Ah ok. I've never ridden before, wasn't aware that those jackets and pants would protect you THAT much.

Thanks!

Years ago racing motocross and desert in So Cal I remember vividly being behind guys slinging rocks off their knobbys, tires, that is. Lotsa bruises.

Good memories.

:yeahthat: I also look way ahead, like a half mile, looking for things like that so I can avoid them. Had a few in the hand/chest before. Hurts.

Jacket did well against the bat.. knew I had hit something.. or something had hit me. Bounced off of my chest, and didn't even bruise, and that was probably 40 MPH.. maybe a little more.

And as far as the panzy comment.. I've had a few panzy friends get up and brush themselves off after a low or high side.. or got hit, that would have hospitalized someone that wasn't dressed right.

A female friend lowsided her R6(?) on an exit ramp doing about 50.. her and the bike slid quite a ways.. brushed herself off, and tried to get the bike rideable to get home.

Two were rearended, one in DC one in Frederick.. no hospital visit for either one.

Another one rearended a truck in VA.. took the windshield with him as he went over the handlebars.. no hospital visit.

Some accidents (car or motorcycle) will be fatal no matter what you do or wear... other accidents, you can walk away, or look forward to >6 months rehab.. being out of work.. pain and suffering. Doesn't take a rocket scientist (or shouldn't) to make the logical choice, especially if you have kids.

Most motorcycle windshields are made of polycorbonate (Lexan) plastic, that's what they use to make bullet proof glass.

WHile riding the harley with a group of riders in Georgia, I got used to coming home "Green" from Bugs.

One of my riding buds about wrecked his bike when he took a Bat to the chest. Bruised his ribs and gave him one helluva bruise. I've had my hands cut pretty badly and even had my pants ripped by stuff coming off of trucks. I did buy and wear chaps and gloves after that trip though. I try to stay off of 95 too, but sometimes ya can't avoid it, or those trucks.

I've had stuff hit my full face helmet so hard it rung my bell pretty good made me think what it would have done had I been wearing something different, or none at all.

Rain hurts like hell and leaves welts if you aren't protected. A stone the size of a rain drop is very dangerous to the bare skin.

There's even an acronym for it: ATGATT, for All The Gear, All The Time. Road rash and skin grafts pretty much suck, and you can never choose your place of accident.

Many like full face helmets, and I dont knock them, although sometimes it looks pretty funny watching a rider on a crotch rocket with a full face helmet and sandals.

Personally ,if I had to wear a full face helmet, I would just as soon ride in a car. too closed in for me, Also we all know riding gear is important, but during the summer I seldom wear leathers. Its all a matter of personal choice and has a lot to do with the way you ride,. If you want to ride on one wheel at 150 then you definitely need some serious gear, and a new brain, but I see a lot of them doing it on Rt. 5 and 210.

My cruiser bike has a good windshield and I seldom get hit in the face, but a truck load of sand is a #####. I try to pass trucks as soon as possible ,but I have found that the low-boy trailers hauling bulldozers or backhoes, dump the most crap on the road.

Once I was following an azz hole in an RV who dumped his toilet while he was riding along. That wasnt pretty.

I have a windshield, but have been hit with bugs in the face. I also own a full face helmet, but seldom wear it because I can't stand the feeling of being closed in. I'm getting used to it bit by bit and will probably wear it full time this season. I caught a bug in the eye last year and that really hurt. It was a gnat or something small, but blurred my vision and really bothered me.
