Got Carded

Getting carded, at least in VA, isn't about how old you might be. It is following the law that says purchasers must have proper photo ID in possession to purchase alcohol. You can be 80 and if you don't have ID in possession they aren't supposed to sell to you. On a side note, a friend owned a bar in rural NY state. As a joke he hung a sign behind the bar that said "Free drinks to anyone over 75 accompanied by a parent". The 75+ year old farmer a few miles away would bring his 95+ father in every Friday. My buddy gladly served him free drinks until his dad died at 98! True story.

Yep, got carded at the one on Hollywood Rd. And believe me, I look well over the age of 21. The one in Leonardtown, never been carded once. You'd think both stores would have the same policy.

Funny thing. When I used to smoke, same thing happened to me. I'm an older grumpy looking fella and most definitely would not be confused with a younger person. Was doing a bit of shopping, had a cart full of things, after everything was scanned and bagged, then asked for a pack or Marlboro's. She got them and then asked for my ID. Said nope. Don't you think I look old enough? Store policy she said. Get me the manager I said. He came over. Said I'm not showing my ID for some smokes. He said it's store policy else I he can't sell them to me. I said, well, if that's the case, have fun putting back all those items now sitting in all those bags because you have lost all my business and walked out. He was a bit shocked I didn't acquiesce.

Some states ...Indiana for example...passed ID laws that make it mandatory for anyone purchasing alcohol to present proof of age to the cashier. That takes the onus off the poor little cashiers and protects them from abuse by crotchety old guys like you and me.

I don't have a problem with being carded and understand the reason for it, but I do think it is hilarious being carded at my age. I never got carded until after I turned 21. :sshrug:

happy to be living
It is policy at Nick's in PF and like a majority of the posters, I haven't looked 21 for many, many years! But I have my license ready for them since I know they will ask for it.

Ok, I get they need to protect themselves from sales to minors, but come on.....

I was waiting to check out and the man in front of me was buying I think just a six pack. He certainly looked old enough that I would have said well past 21. But the clerk none the less asked for ID. Best decision he made that day as the guy turned out to be undercover. I don't think there was a sale but his boss was happy he was doing a 100% ID check.
Some places I think just care more about their license than the sale. I know one place that has a 100% ID check sign and they sold to a minor who was using a stolen credit card. Better yet, a female's name on the CC and a teenage male.

And this exactly the reason why it's store policy to ask ID for everyone. It's too easy when a clerk is busy to misjudge someone's age. If they're wrong, the store is fined and the clerk is fined.

If you seriously did that, you're the type of customer that they don't want to come back.

Ya know something, I do not play stupid games with namby pamby lets just ID everyone businesses. If businesses hire stupid people, or are stupid themselves, they deserve to be treated as such. Common sense goes along way and seems to have been thrown in the garbage disposal to play to the PC crowd. And all of you who are apologists for these businesses just add fuel to encourage their continued stupidity.

encourage their continued stupidity.
Hardly stupidity. It's a well-considered business policy designed to protect their employees from idiots like you, especially underaged buyers who try to pressure clerks into selling them alcohol or cigarettes and then getting the business in trouble when it turns out to be a Liquor Board sting. But you're too caught up in your antiestablishment outrage to see things from the business owners' point of view.

If I were a store owner or manager and someone wanted to see me because my employee asked for ID as they have been instructed to do, I wouldn't cave to your stupidity either. What a rebel you are :bigwhoop:

There are ways for business people to calm a customer down and win him over. I must have been a little grumpy after navigating the customer support computer voice menu at one of my banks and finally getting to the man. He (a young guy, I would guess in his 20s) must have noted it in my voice and after probably 15 seconds he was my best friend and I was ready to take him out for a few beers after work. You just have to be trained in how to handle people. The last thing you want to do is be insulting or dismissive. Negative word of mouth travels much faster than does the positive.
