Groomer needed

We just adopted a Maine Coon from the humane society. He had been cooped up in the quarantine area since April because of space issues and so he is a mess. FYI, I'm not faulting the Humane Society at all for this, the number of cats they have is astronomical and I know they are doing the best they can. Some of his fur is matted and he is in desperate need of a good grooming. I did a search of the forum and the posts about cat groomers were a couple of years old. I'm looking for groomer recommendations in St Mary's county.

Try FurTamers FurTamers.com (301) 481-0956. She is a mobile groomer that recently returned to the area and she has done an awesome job on one of my dogs. Not all groomers will do cats but I know she does.

There is also an advertiser on here named Shelley's Pet Boutique that I have always heard great things about. I believe she is in Hollywood but I do not know if she grooms cats. Maybe she or one of her customers will pipe in.

Oh and good on you for adopting an adult cat with special needs :yay:

What a wonderful thing for you to adopt this adult cat. I know he must be so happy to have his own home.

If the mats are really bad, matted all the way to the skin, whoever grooms him will have to be experienced with this procedure. Cat skin is very thin and fragile, and if not careful you can easily cut right through the skin with scissors or clippers while trying to remove the mats.

The best (kindest) thing may be to take him to a veterinarian to be lightly sedated and clipped- someone who specializes in cats, like Dr. Bennett at Park.

If the mats are just superficial you can probably get by with the groomer recommendations already given. Good luck and congratulations on adopting this beautiful boy!

I know that you wanted St Mary's County, but just in case, Rita's Grooming is located in Prince Frederick next to Radio Shack off Rte 4. She has been doing my persian for years, and does great work. (410) 414-7511. As stated by rabbithead, his/her first visit for a slight trim might be the Vet. Oh, and thank you for adopting an older pet!!

Shelly grooms our 2 long haired persions and is the best groomer we have had experience with. Our boys love going there and are well cared for and look terrific when I pick them up! Two thumbs up for Shelly!

I hate to disagree with everyone but I would not recommend Shelley's Pet Boutique. Her prices are great but I wasn't comfortable leaving my dogs there. During my experience, the place was not clean, a woman was holding down a dirty-bottomed cat while another was shaving it, the room was quite chaotic, and she yelled at my barking dogs "SHUT-UP!!" multiple times. I could hear her yelling as I made it out to my car so I turned back around, gathered my dogs, and left.

Yes, I realize that she is a fellow forumite who many of you know personally.
No, I cannot recommend another cat groomer.
I'm sorry to report an unpleasant experience and maybe I caught her on a bad day or something so my actual recommendation is to really check her out before choosing to leave your pet there.

I admire your brazeness, but couldn't you have sent sparkyaclown a PM? I have heard very good things about Shelley, and if she were closer, I'd take my animals there without question..

I did consider a PM and in the past I have done that. It's been a year since it happened. Again, maybe I caught her at a really bad time and my experience is an outlier, I don't know. She certainly was very nice to me, she returned my phone calls (which is uber important to me but appears to be a dying practice), she fit me in quickly, and her price is easily the lowest I've seen in this area.

My goal is actually to encourage everyone to make sure that your groomer is right for YOU. We all have different ideas on how it's ok to treat a pet. I think there are some people who wouldn't think my story is a big deal but I do. And it's HARD to find a groomer here. It took me years to find a one for my dogs.

Feedback is important, otherwise we're wasting this person's (and other forum reader's) time, especially if we aren't being very honest by representing only the good and hiding the bad.

I have never been to Shelley's place, however, I'm sure I sound awful to my neighbors when I am training a dog to NOT bark at ME for attention. If they don't listen, I get closer and say it with more force. Eventually the dog will stop, but sometimes it's not until I yell LOUDLY. It probably sounds bad to others, but it doesn't make me a bad dog person. I have to repeat that process over and over whenever the dog barks. It can take WEEKS/MONTHS for the dog to fully comply with the first request to stop barking.

Dogs need to learn when to bark and when not to. Barking whenever they want to bark isn't a well trained dog IMHO. If a dog in my care barks AT me for attention, I tell the dog to STOP. The longer it takes the dog to comply, the louder I get until the dog stops. I will not allow a dog to bark incessantly for no good reason. Like I said, some may view that as being mean to the dog, but no dog should be allowed to bark on and on w/o being corrected.

SMH..... wow

First things first.... your training method to teaching a dog to stop barking is SOOOO wrong. I think you would benefit from attending a real training session with some trainers that KNOW how to curb K9 Behavior.

all you are doing is instilling fear in a dog by yelling at them... rather than understanding how and why the K9 is really barking... and how to correctly TEACH the behavior you are looking for.

There are CORRECT ways to train a modified behavior...

Sorry you dont understand K9 behavior ... but yelling at a dog as you have described is just like beating them physically ... but you are just doing it emotionally.

This is probably none of my business, but did you tell her how you felt? Feed back is important just like you said. We have a small business also, and we encourage feed back. It helps us to learn how to improve our business.

I breifly touched on this in another thread, but I have a high Prey Drive 16 month old Boston Terrier. She chases Cats, catches Squirrels, and is aggressive with Dogs that are bigger than she is. Can this be worked with? If you can, send me a PM to let me know who to contact. I'm afraid that she will actually KILL a Cat if she caught one. I love her, and want to keep her. She was born Deaf, and there aren't many people that want a deaf Dog. She does work well on her training Collar. I use the vibration mode to get her attention. I've only had to nick her maybe 10 times in over a year. I live in Southern Calvert. Your input is appreciated.

I can send you to the best around!!! She has worked with dogs with HIGH PREY drive her whole career!!!

I have send many to her and they all love her.

And she also does have experiance with deaf dogs as one of my friends has a deaf dog and goes there also for training!!!

and she may not be "aggressive" but more "reactive".... there is a BIG difference between those two... and many people DO NOT understand the difference.

You are implying that the way you do it is the only/best way. People need to stop doing that. Same goes with how to raise children, people debate that all the time also.

The service I provide is to bridge the gap between homes for critters that end up on my doorstep. It was never my intention to be a dog trainer. I don't run across many dogs that bark a lot, but when I do, I handle it. There are as many ways to train dogs as there are ways to parent children, and people will always be debating the subject.

Maybe in the future we can get a dog trainer to foster the dogs in need of training so the dogs can be trained before they go to their new homes. Surely no one wants a dog that is going to annoy them by barking constantly to get attention.

I thought this thread was about needed a good groomer not a dog trainer. I highly recommend Shelley burns as she does a great job of grooming my Yorkies.
Last I checked I pay her to groom them...not train them.

ark... im not saying that...

but if you recall back how many times YOU ask ME how to do things, what to do.... and so on...and I give you what i know.

Im passing on the knowledge of K9 behavior... thing i have learned thru the way....

I have had the wonderful opportunity to be able to pair up and learn some great things from my trainer. She has opened many doors for me being able to understand the issues I have had with the one dog. Without her help I may not have been able to do it.

What MOST people know…. I one should never YELL AT A DOG to get them to learn a behavior…. Hell even the trainers at PETCO or PETSMART will teach you that.
