Ham Loaf

Seems like a long time to bake.

No temperature given. This might be the old-fashioned slow-bake method.

It sounds evil and delicious. Artery clogging and drool worthy.

I'm going to try it at 350* for an hour, baste, another 15 minutes, and then let the boys taste test.

Bunch of perverts.

I inherited a hand operated meat grinder. Beautiful piece of machinery. The suction cup I was supposed to mount on my counter had gone dry.

I get the butcher to take care of me now.

The butcher must like you better than me! I was all hopeful and asked if she would grind the ham. She said they are only allowed to grind beef and veal at Food Lion because of cross contamination! :tantrum

You'll have to go to PA for ham loaf, they have it pre-made or you could have the butchers grind the ham and you make it yourself.
I lived there for 10 yrs and wanted to find a corned ham...and they had no idea what the hell a corned ham was.

Ham loaf is good! Standard fare for wakes -- somebody ALWAYS brings a ham loaf to the bereaved family in western PA.

I didn't realize it was a region-specific thing.... They were easy to find in Western PA! I guess it's like chipped ham. :) Okay, I'll just make a special request for it when we go home for Thanksgiving and try to tell these pregnancy cravings that they just have to wait...

Thanks for the help everyone.

Just go out and buy a cheap meat grinder or use the chop blade on your food processor. Ham is a softer meat so the grinder doesn't have to be that powerful. Maybe even a food chopper would work

Me neither until this thread -- didn't really notice the absence of it down here until someone brought one to Mom's when my Dad passed away a few years ago.

And since you mentioned chipped ham -- supposedly, somewhere in Maryland they carry it --- Isaly’s – Chipped Chopped Ham, Deli & Dairy Products, Family Favorites for Generations

Maybe they could ship you some hamloaf with some dry ice? Or hell, just drive up -- it's do-able -- I do it regularly!

Now I'm hungry for it. Might have to email Mom & see if she can get me one for when I go up there next.

It lists Walmart in California MD as a carrier of chipped ham? Hmm... I am going to have to investigate this further too... Thank you! :)

Did you read the site. Walmart carries the meat, not the sauce. They have some tasty looking recipes on the site also. I will have to try a few.

I have said this on other threads including the cruise ship thread. Was raised with spam and still like it so does the state of Hawaii, they serve it at McDonalds and Burger King and have traditional recipes that use it. One of my favorites spam fried rice.

In Hawaii, Spam is so popular it is sometimes dubbed "The Hawaiian Steak".

Will I piss everyone off if I say eww?

My first thought, but I would at least try it.

No.

I'm still trying to perfect a salmon loaf.

I never had to clean it since I couldn't anchor it.

I am not going to buy a new piece of equipment (no room in the kitchen) when the butchers I've met are pleasant and like to grind for me.

If that is anything like the salmon cakes my Mom used to make, no thanks.
And you should know to take care of your cups.

I don't mind spam. used to be a staple on camping trips when I was a kid.

I've never had pork ground there. I do buy lean meat (beef) cuts on sale and have them ground for burger. It's much cheaper than buying already ground 80/20 and leaner.

I now know I can't get pork or ham ground there. This was not my intention. :flowers:

My entire family hates them. It's worse than a beef liver dinner w/onions. :killingme Gotta torment them all somehow.

I love Spam and I'm also fond of Libby's tinned corned beef.

I would say 375* for 1 1/2 hrs. I make an Italian Meatloaf that calls for the same amount of ground beef (2.5 lbs) and the same amount of bread crumbs. It is 375* for 1 1/2 hrs. so the time doesn't seem so off to me.

DR,

I remember gagging down my grandmother's salmon cakes. There is not enough ketchup in the world to change its taste. In fact, I'd much rather have a spam sandwich. :yay:

Liver is what I gave my kids for dinner if they didn't take their vitamins before school. They still talk about it.:killingme
