Harley U chopper

To be honest..I actually find the reclined back riding position quite OK as long as the hands fall naturally on the grips (i.e no ape hangers or extreme elk horns for this kid) ..and I cannot ride one of the ricer/racer/GP bikes for even an hour in that 'forward crouch/horse jockey' position without becoming intensely uncomfortable. Ugh.

But best of the best for me has always been seated straight up..like my FLHTC dresser..

Gilligan nice looking bike, good luck with it. Drove one years ago, wasn't mine was a friends. Felt good on a long straight highway, almost like driving a recliner down the road. Got a little nervous for me when we got on the back country twisty curvy roads, no real problem just had to pay a lot more attention. Never owned a chopper always street bikes no custom stuff. Have always owned Hondas, BSA's and Triumphs, and Yamaha's. Absolutely dislike crotch rockets, look uncomfortable as hell to me.

Funny thing is, I owned a chopped bobber back in '82 but only for about 6 months or so (sold it to buy a KZ1000 Z1R..I was in to a 'different kind of ride back then..LOL). Owned quite a few bikes since then and now but nothing chopped or extended. Hope I have not forgotten how to anticipate their rather nasty turning behavior..

So I've been 'sans ride' for a good 6 years now, after selling my FLHTC, and have been itching to buy another ever since (the FLHTC was bike # 14).

So what did I just do to put two wheels back under me?? I bought a vintage/classic chopper..with a 40s-vintage 74 ci U-model flathead.

I need my head examined.

I owned a '42 flathead years ago. Restored it to original condition. Not chopped. A nice classic bike with a great sound. Enjoy yours when the weather gets conducive to riding again.

Progress... The 'Captain America' stuff is gone and in its place..a bobber rear fender and a solo seat with....yes..spring suspension! :yahoo:

Still waiting for the flywheel/rod assy to come back from Truett and Osborn..and then its assembly time. Oh..and still need paint too.

It was an interesting test ride. The sound of an old Harley flathead was music to my ears. Starting the bike..the bruises, cussing, wrenched knee, sore back and all else that goes with it....not so much fun.

But hey..its 64 years old and I'm not..yet.

Thanks Larry. I'm paying dearly today for starting an antique Harley yesterday. Every muscle from my chin down is hurtin'...

I'm thinking that the thing will make a great base for a coffee table. Nice clear acrylic top...

Thanks!

I'm getting much better at starting the thing and almost have it down to where a casual observer would not think I'm getting ready to beat it with a ball bat.

Couple mo' pics from today.

Going for the plates today. Its so old (>50 years) that it qualifies for "Historic, Permanent", meaning I register it once and that's it.
