Have you ever changed your grooming habits?

Have you ever changed any of your grooming habits because of what's the latest fad?

Anything? Stopped shaving and grown a beard because it was in, shaved your arms?

I never have.

The most I've done to be trendy is change hairstyles. For instance, I no longer have a 70s poodle perm or 80s big hair.

Had a hair past shoulder length, back in the mid to late 70's. Works well back then!

I got out of the Army in 88, by 91 it was down to my waist

I chopped it off in 2000 when I got my 1st IT JOB ... time to grow up

Fads seem to have more of an impact on younger folks, however everyone is subject to clothing fads/styles right? If we weren't, some people would still be wearing bell bottoms and fringe vests.

As frightening as it sounds some still do.

A beautician where I used to go in the 70's was playing show and tell with her underarms in the shop. A lady had commented when she was getting shampooed by her and saw it. The girl was bragging on how its the natural thing to do blah blah blah... No thanks, the underarms I must shave.

I had a counselor at Y camp who didn't shave her legs or pits (or, I'm assuming, anything else). I admired her and have a hippie granola side, so I decided I'd be all natural as well so I could be cool like her.

Fortunately I was 8 or 9 years old and by the time I had to worry about shaving and things like that I had moved on to admire other things.

Not shaving the underarms of women used to be pretty common in Europe. I was told that only the prostitutes shave, so they try to make a distinction themselves from them.

Everyone has. If you ever copied a hair style of a favorite singer/actor/actress/athlete, then you have done it too.

Long hair was in when I was in High School and I tried to grow it out but it always looked stringy and greasy. When I was in the Navy, long hair was still in but I couldn't go along with it. Once short hair became more popular I was relieved that I could just cut it all off and never worry about keeping it combed or drying it.

In the 70's and 80's guys were supposed to have a bunch of chest hair, but there I was all hairless. Now that body hair is out and I'm old, it has decided to grow like crazy.

I don't go crazy with body hair, but I do groom. I don't need an out of control forest scaring anyone off.

I tend to be pragmatic about these things. Watch something to see if it catches on, and wait for it to become a bit less extreme than at first. Then I wait a bit longer, and I'm back in style again without changing a thing. It has worked for 30 years. And I'm really glad that I didn't feel the need to grow my hair long again. Too wavy and curly to manage when long.

Clothing could work the same way; I rue the day that I discarded all my wide 1970's neckties, because wide neckties returned and have remained in fashion for a depressingly long time. By way of self-punishment I go without a necktie most days. I wear them just often enough to stay in practice for tying the perfect Full-Windsor knot.

In '85 the Navy decided that a beard was no longer traditional so I shaved down to a porn star mustache.
When I got out I grew it back

Couldn't get a "No shave" chit, huh?

Oh, BTW, over the holidays, I lost my ponytail. Kinda didn't have a choice. It was three against one; and one of the three was holding the scissors.

Maybe twice - in the 70's, I parted my hair on one side and combed it to the right. It became fashionable to part it in the middle, so I did that, like most guys I knew then.

After a while, I just brushed everything straight back like I just stepped out of the pool, and I've more or less always done that since.

However, for a short time in the 80's, when my hair was a lot longer and ridiculously curly - (short breath) - I had it permed. Yep. Couldn't stand the mess every day of curls that looked like a rat's nest.

Once short hair came back into vogue in the 90's, I pretty much have always done it the same way - brush it back, let it dry, don't care how it looks.
