Little Girl Hazel is feeling a bit better. She finished off her 5 day supply of pain pills last night.

Here is her updated picture - I forgot to ask how long she needs to be prevented from licking her abdomen - anyone know offhand? I recall they said no baths/grooming for 2 weeks. I better look at her instructions when I get home huh?

Lovely introduction of Hazel and will donate after this post. Great way to get attention and to make life comfortable for others. A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.

I think her personality is finally coming out. She is starting to feel more and more relaxed  and it makes me feel good to see her happy and enjoying her life. She's old, semi-broken-down, sometimes fearful, but mostly happy little girl. She knows I'm her human and she follows me around. I like that when I talk to her, that little tail of hers starts wagging back and forth - she is so cute. I hope she gets the opportunity to live for many years so I can cuddle her and enjoy her.

I love that cone-head picture Ark. She looks like a little flower. What a lucky little flower she is! I suppose you're keeping her? Congratulations.

If I came across a home that could give her more time/attention than I can, that wanted her, I'd let her go, but I'd surely miss her a lot. For now my mission is to find out all of her health needs and get her healthy. Next is to get her back/hip x-rays after she recuperates from the dental and spay surgeries. Poor girl only has 1/4 of her teeth left.

She has reverse sneeze episodes regularly. If I pet her and talk to her, they subside more quickly. I have not dealt with reverse sneeze episodes before. When she has the episodes at night, I wake up and check on her.

This is week 2 of Hazel's recuperation from the spay and dental surgeries. She has been getting excited to go for a walk and has been running. It makes me feel good to see her so excited and happy. I got home from work yesterday to find she had been snacking on chicken eggs again, and she had peed on the piddle pad I put down by the back door.

Hazel is doing great. I gave her a bath yesterday and she was feeling so good that she was running circles around me when we went for a walk. I was looking at her and thinking wow - this girl went from being sad and pathetic-looking to really feeling much better once her dental issues were dealt with. I bet her mouth feels much better now.

We have a campaign going to get help for the critters: http://www.gofundme.com/f6iirg

Hazel was alone in the house for a few hours with full access to everything (had restricted access when no one was home prior) and when I came back she had knocked down the dog food bin and had it open on the kitchen floor. I am not sure how much she ate, but over the next 24 hours (through yesterday evening), she managed to poop like 5 times! I mean HUGE amounts of poop also. She's fortunate she didn't end up with serious problems from eating so much.

Last night I left her alone in the kitchen for maybe 10 minutes, and when I walked back in she had already eaten 2 fresh eggs that were in the basket from yesterday's egg collection ...... she saw me and cowered ...... she knew she was wrong. This little girl is causing me to get more creative about how I keep critters out of the food .

Hazel was running along like nothing was wrong and ... blooop .... over goes her back end and she falls. She jumped back up barely missing a beat and was running again. She doesn't KNOW she has a problem, so she just gets up and keeps going. It's time to get her in to the vet to get an x-ray to see what's going on. I'll make an appointment for her for next week.

With the way she's eating, she's probably not anemic now! That's too funny Ark.

She is making me laugh and walking her is always interesting because she catches a scent, puts her head down to the ground, and her little feet start going full speed ahead to find whatever that scent leads to lol. She wants to go into the woods, um no thank you and I am oh so glad you are on a leash right now girlie. Beagles are notorious for following their nose and wandering off, which doesn't surprise me that she was picked up as a "stray", but what I don't understand is why her people didn't come looking for her at the shelter? You can't call ... that would go like this .... Hi do you have any stray beagles there? Yes we do, we have 5 right now.

I hope there isn't anything major going on in her hip/leg that will require surgery, but since her whole back end just falls over, something is going on. I just started her on a joint supplement yesterday. Hoping I get lucky that the supplement can help her at least in part. I am going to video and share how she acts when she is about to get a meal - she dances around all silly.

I can't wait to see that video. She sounds like a real sweet dog. I had a beagle, who wouldn't have cared of his nose led him in front of a Mack Truck. Even neutering didn't slow him down. He was near 17 when he passed, and he was still going pretty strong up until he took his last breath. If Hazel doesn't appear to be in pain, maybe this is congenital? Or neurological? I have n clue, but it's best to get an XRay.

Yup I think they did an x-ray on my big boy (memory, oh goodness) and his does appear to be neurological. I think she'd wander in front of a mack truck too ... that nose can get her in trouble lol. I feel like I need a nap and it's still morning - what's going on?

Hazel requires extra attention due to having so few teeth left (approx. 10 out of 42). So I feed her dry food that's been soaked in water (vet said that actually helps unlock some of the nutrition) and I generally will mix it in some canned dog food. When the dry food is soaking up water, I place the plastic container in the refrigerator so bacteria doesn't start growing in it (I use 1 container to make 3 meals per day for her, so the container goes back in the fridge between meals until I use it all up, then I start the next batch for the next day). When I use part of a can of dog food, I cover it and put it in the fridge of course. So her food in whole or part ends up cold. Knowing how I suffer with hot/cold sensitivities, I warm her food up slightly before I give it to her. Now every time she sees me at the refrigerator or the microwave, she thinks it's time for her to eat again LOL.

I took Hazel and MaryKate to Tractor Supply on Saturday to do an adoption event and 3 people want to adopt Hazel and no one wanted MaryKate who hid in the corner of the cage most of the time. She's usually so social, poor baby. So ...... I may actually go ahead and allow Hazel to be adopted if one of the offered homes can give her more than I can in terms of time and attention? Every time I see pictures of Lacy the JRT with her new family, I feel so good for her to get so much attention and love. I know Hazel doesn't get a lot of attention from me, but unless someone else can do better, I'll keep her as my little snuggle bunny for now. PLUS we have to get the hip x-ray and have her eyes checked. Yup I said eyes. Guy working at Tractor Supply asked me about her eyes, I said you see that too huh? So he thinks she has cataracts. I may be taking her today, we'll see what the vet's schedule is.

I said I was open to that ... I have to be sure it isn't a person who is as busy as I am. I believe the main person said to me that they were a very busy person BUT they thought she was just so SWEET. Little Hazel was winning over lots of kids too - just wagging her little tail and everyone remarked at how calm she was. If I get Hazel placed, I will go back to the shelter to pick out another old soul needing a break. Even my Mom said that she wants another beagle after meeting Hazel, a female one .
