Here's my experience:

DLP/Projection LCDTV = Sucks! Poor picture quality and horrible viewing angle. Picture doesn't do well if you're watching in a bright room. The only benefit you get is a bigger screen for the price. Unless you want to watch bigger crappy picture. However, Laser LCDTV is not that bad (I think only Mitsubishi makes them) but still not as good as LCD and Plasma.

It all depends on what you want to use it for. I have both Plasma and LCD.
I prefer my Panasonic plasma to watch movies as it produces better picture quality than the LCD. The brand names I recommend for plasma is Panasonic and Pioneer (best). Stay away from Samsung plasmas.

LCD is good for video games, computer, HDTV. Although I don't recommend watching fast action movies or sports with LCD because it causes blurriness. Unless you have the 120Hz set (which costs more) but it produces picture that seems like it was recorded from a home camcorder when you're watching other things. Luckily, you can turn it off when you want to and only turn it on for sports. Brand names I recommend (in order) Sharp, Samsung, and Sony (best)

Plasma and LCD are my suggestions, the rest is up to you. Go to the store and spend an hour looking at the sets they have. Even ask if they can pop in a regular DVD for you to see because the stuff they have on are crap.

You will need to adjust your TV setting when you get home to get the best possible picture. It is not like the old days when you go home with a TV and start watching it. It needs some fine tuning.

As for cables and accessories... NEVER BUY FROM THE STORE!!!!!!! A $5 cable can cost you $50. I am not exaggerating, I used to work for Best Buy and know their true values. Best site for cables is HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more! <--- How cool! They create a link for me. I don't work for monoprice btw.

Their cables are tested and deemed to be comparable to that of Monster cable! If you need more info, feel free to PM me.

I bought this set last spring. Good bang for buck. Watching football in HD I can see the individual whiskers on the players faces. That's good enough for me.

Things I avoided...

1 - Plasma has shiny screen and shows the reflection of all the lights and stuff behind you. No problem for watching movies in a totally dark room but not practical for everyday use.

2 - Many sets have "shiny" frames surrounding the screen. Not good. See #1 above. This Sanyo set has "dull" frame surrounding the screen. No distracting reflection.

No offense, but if you are gonna go "value" route, I'd go Vizio way before Sanyo. Not saying some don't have good experiences with Sanyo but I know a handful of people that have had big time issues.

Besides with the deals that can be had now, a Samsung is marginally more and rated so much higher.

Looked at Visio. See item#2 on my list above.

Besides, the set I bought has 118 reviews on Walmart's website. Total ranking is 4+ stars outta 5. Good enough for me. Especially when talking about an item that only costs a few hundred bucks.

Understand, just basing this off of the AVS forums where the A/V geeks hang out.

I got the same TV as Crashtest (42" Sanyo) and I love it.
I dont have anything other than basic cable because its the "best" I can get where I live so im not worried about HDTV stuff other than the Xbox 360 and the PC.

With PC games even though its not 120hz it still plays just as well as it does on my 19" monitor. And games on the 360 look great!
My TV before this one was a 27" RCA and it was good but I love this Sanyo better! It was had for under 1000 with a 2 year warenty.

AV freaks are like Audiophiles. Every one of them has a preference and thinks its the best no matter what!

I went into the store. Looked at TVs and picked one that I was happy with. I wasnt picking out a TV that Joe Shmo on the net said was good.

That is fine if you are happy with it, but there is more to picking a Samsung over a Sanyo than just "internet preferences" or whatever you want to call it. Samsung has gained a reputation in LCD's, not just because of internet gossip, but because they really are good and seem to be a decent value too.

I am not a TV snob by any means, and always like a good value but lets be honest, if someone wanted to trade you straight up for a comparable Samsung, you wouldn't do it?

BJ's sells HDMI cables for about $17.99. There is absolutely no need to spend $50+ on an HDMI cable because there is no difference between a $100 and a $18 HDMI cable.

If you are on cable, you don't need a HD box. There is no channel guide but the HD is free. We've had ours about 6 months and would definitely recommend it.

How do we get free HD channels without the HD box from the service provider (Metrocast)? I'd love to throw that box off the bridge.

Good question. Here in St Marys, the only thing free (meaning no box is required) over the cable are the standard def, non digital channels. Digital channels and HD stuff require the boxes.

Now, OTA, or Over The Air, HD channels that are broadcast are free, and if your close enough, or have a big enough antenna, to pick up those broadcasts, AND your TV has a tuner built in, you can get HD for free.

I suspect willie either is confused about what he's seeing, or he's getting the OTA channels and not knowing it.

I don't know about metro-cast but with comcast, all I did was do the auto programming on my TV's whenever I first hook them up. I was surprised to see all these channels that were detected that I never knew exsisted. I do not use any type of box but for me, for example, channel 9 is WUSA regular and then 18.1 is WUSA HD. I am not really sure how it works but the difference in the picture is incredible.

There are several channels like this for me, the regular broadcast is on the traditional channel number and then on some weird xx.x is the HD version.

The TV we bought was from Costco and it came w/ the cables for free :yahoo:

We dont have cable we have directv so we had to upgrade to the hd box $200 bucks :faint:

Both Metrocast and Comcast send everything over the cable. Even the stuff your neighbors ordered from on Demand or some of the PPV that is not scrambled. Their box is what restricts what you get but the box also provides a guide and gets the channels organized. If your TV has a QAM tuner then it's all available without a box If you have young kids, be careful as you might be shocked at some of the stuff your neighbors might order.

The cable company's are aware of this so I'm sure this won't last forever.

My apologies, Willie, I was unaware of this. Since my SXRD has a QAM tuner, I'll be plugging the cable directly into it to see how this works for me. Wont be getting rid of the cable box, or course, since I love my DVR too much, but anything in the name of science.
