My apologies, Willie, I was unaware of this. Since my SXRD has a QAM tuner, I'll be plugging the cable directly into it to see how this works for me. Wont be getting rid of the cable box, or course, since I love my DVR too much, but anything in the name of science.

I'd love to hear a report back how this goes, when tested by someone else. This is the first I've heard of it :yay:

Both Metrocast and Comcast send everything over the cable. Even the stuff your neighbors ordered from on Demand or some of the PPV that is not scrambled. Their box is what restricts what you get but the box also provides a guide and gets the channels organized. If your TV has a QAM tuner then it's all available without a box If you have young kids, be careful as you might be shocked at some of the stuff your neighbors might order.

The cable company's are aware of this so I'm sure this won't last forever.

Yup, I have seen some channels that only come in sparatically and it is like I am watching someone else pay perview, when they fwd or rewind that is what I see too. Weird.

Can anyone explain this, when I turned to Nick, the sound will be there for a second and then it is like someone muted it. This is the only channel this happens on.

Well, plugged in about 15 minutes ago, TV says to wait up to 50 minutes for completion. Shows 80 analog channels found, and 28 digital, looks like about 1/3rd of the progress bar left to go.

Success. No time to explore fully, but I've seen a few of the networks, some 1080i, some 720p, have WETA HD on in 1080i as we speak. I'll post pics later today.

Yup, WETA has like 6 or 7 different channels on mine.

Are you saying you pick up the 700 - 799 HD channels without the box?

They won't be those numbers. The local HD channels are 18, 18.1, 18.2, 18.3, WTTG is 105.1501 or something like that. Analog, HD, SD and basic digital are on separate channels. This is only cable and not satellite or FIOS.

Too bad it won't last forever.

I pay for basic cable, when I hooked up my tv it detected all the normal analog channels and 100-and some odd digital channels. Most of those are crap noone wants to watch anyway but still a surprise to me.

Willie, how long has it been this way?? I know since atleast early last year because it has been over a year since I discovered it.

And

You have any idea how long this is going to last?

Yep, not all of them, just the networks, none of the HGTV or Animal Planet types, just NBC, CBS, etc. Now, since I do pay for HD, its not a %100 test, youd need someone whos only paying for basis service for that. But I see no reason to doubt it, certainly not enough to lug my BATV to the one guys house I know who does have basic only.

I promise you it works.

Basic cable is provided in my HOA fee, so instead of paying for cable twice so to speak, I just have basic since it is already there anyway.

I get HD with no box or extra fees to the cable company.

Pretty cool. I wont be giving up my DVR, nor my channel guide, nor the extra HD channels, but still a good option. another thing to think about is the application for an HTPC.

Yes, very neat.
I agree that I wouldn't give up DVR (if I had it :ohwell: ) nor the guide, because forget going through all of those channels w/o one, BUT, if you are in the "just paid for basic" boat, that is a neat addition for free :yay:

A DVR is like video crack, really. Like the highest end version of a car, dont try it unless you have the means, you;ll be heartbroken having to give it up.
If I had to choose between HD and DVR, it would really be a tough choice. Being able to timeshift a show is fantastic, along with pause and rewind. When I travel its a pain.

Oh, my parents have both, and no question, I would take DVR over HD if I HAD to choose. HD is fine and dandy but until there are more channels, and I get high quality/surround audio with the package, it isn't quite there for me. HD sports are great, no doubt, but I would take the ability to pause/rewind/record over a better picture on what, half the channels? I don't know how many HD channels there are now but it seems like for any number, you pay out the ass

I agree. Not a good test. Besides, if I can't get the NFL channel then it does me no good to even own a TV.
