Any decent hair dresser would have seen the lice/eggs. We used to get head lice cases occasionally when I was in beauty school. No big deal - you sanitize everything before and after each patron anyway.

To loosen up the nits, saturate her hair with vinegar (make sure you get it really well close to her scalp). They'll be easier to comb out then. Most of the time what people think are "eggs" are just empty egg cases - the louse inside is dead. Then just check for live lice 7 days after treatment and every day for a few days after that. If you don't see anymore live lice, you're good to go.

Hopefully they were decent, recognized them and sanitized everything. The responsible thing to do would have been to alerted the place.

Sure, but it's really not that big a deal. It would have to be a pretty grubby salon with some seriously unsanitary practices for you to catch head lice from another customer.
