Helmets!!

OK, going to start another thread to give them the praises they so rightly deserve.

I went to Bob's and found the Helmet I wanted, Nolan N102 with the sun visor. Bob's wanted $305 (or was it $310) called my daughter and had her google Nolan N102, and do a search on Helmet harbor.. the lowest price she could find on the internet was $270.. figured I was at Bob's wouldn't have to wait for shipping, I'd pay the extra $30.. LUCKILY they didn't have the color helmet I wanted.. Headed back to Annapolis to pick up Tracy and stopped at Crofton.. ALMOST bought a N100E that was on sale for $193 but they didn't have the box so no breath deflector etc.. I actually brought it up to the counter and changed my mind (It was a little too big at XL). I decided to buy one online.. and continued to the mall to pick Tracey up. On the way home there was a small mom and pop motorcyle shop that I drove by but hadn't stopped in yet, and talked Tracey into stopping.. I walked into Annapolis Motor Sports. Lincoln St, Annapolis.. The FRIENdLIEST people I've met in a long time..

First I asked her to price a tire out for me.. I konw what I paid for it online, and how much I paid to get it mounted.. for $5 more I can drive my bike into their shop and they will remove the old tire and mount balance and put it back on the bike.. They already had me sold at that point.

I look on their shelves, they have ONE Nolan helmet, another XL N100E this one was $185).. ask her "Anymore??" She replied, "No, but I can have one here next business day for the same price." Well I know everywhere else I've been they've wanted $240 - 250 for the same helmet.. so I asked if that was true with any helmet.. She priced the N102, Black Cherry in color.. $220.. She sold me a helmet, and got me pised at Bob's.. if she can sell me this helmet for 220 and make a profit, why was Bob's selling the same for $305.. she answered that question for me.. she has asked him the same thing, and his reply.. "Because I can."

Great people. SMALL company.. and like she said with their location they have to do SOMETHING to bring in the customers. YOu won't find them unless you are looking for them, and their customer draw is lower then the internet pricing.. or at least lower then any other bike shop pricing. They've got my business for sure.

Arai Quantum/f

I have ridden with my noggin tucked snugly inside my Arai. As it turns out I have an Arai shaped head!! I have ridden with this brain bucket in the lows of mid 20's to the 108 degree heat of Laughlin NV. It is comfortable, but it is 5 years old and is due to be retired and replaced with something new. Arai has changed their business plan and decided to eliminate their brand from those that like to shop online. In order to replace this marvel of engineering I would have to plop down the hard earned $$ at a dealership, so I can be properly "fitted" or ride to one of the discount sellers. One of the helmet resellers will give me $150 off a new Arai if I will drive to their location in Southern Florida. I have been anxiously been awaiting ItsBobs review of the Nolan 102 as I will not be told how I will shop!!!

Living in Olympia, over on the wet coast, I need to know how leakproof it is (Tracy, get out the hose), is it quiet (the wind boiling off the windscreen of the ole LT can get noisy when traveling at 80+ mph out west),can it house speakers? So many more questions, so little time!

Bob, get out there and put some serious miles on it, would ya!! :wench: :buttkick:

Hey, ItsGene! I can't wait to meet you in a few weeks. The roadtrip to the rally should be great.

By the way, how did you find SoMD.com?

I was doing a search for reviews of the Nolan N102 since my dear younger brother had opted to purchase one. The review of the N102 was one of the first on the list.

Very much looking forward to the ride to Vermont. Working on getting the unigo prepared for the journey. Just had a new transmission output shaft seal installed. Going over some final travel plans such as, routes, mileage per day, location of repair facilities, how much time to spend at the "Mall of America", etc.

I am hoping to spend enough time in Vermont to meet all these wonderful people from Maryland!

I posted a review of the Nolan compared to the Caberg in here somewhere

http://forums.somd.com/showthread.php?t=77581

VERY nice, and hands down a better helmet then the Caberg. DEEEP pockets for speakers, and the interior of the helmet almost feels like you are wearing shooting muffs.. Traffic noise was crystal clear up to about 50 MPH, with VERY little wind noise.. it whistles when you have the Sun VIsor up, and whistles even more when the main visor is up, but not distractingly so.

I can see water geting into the sides of the visor.. there is about a four inch gap on both sides of the bottom of the visor that there isn't any rubber stripping. You turn your head going about 65 or 70 that will give you an idea of how loud a Caberg is, almost. I think as long as you are facing forward it will be fine, but I like to turn my head to clear the rain off of my visor. The way this summer is going, I should be able to get a ride in the rain within a day or two.

I rode around Annapolis a little bit tiwh the front flipped up, and still up to 50 MPH quiet as can be.

The ONLY thing Caberg has as an advantage is the internal sun visor, I'm going to miss it, but the external works well, though I'll probably end up removing it, and going back to contacts and sunglassed for daytime travelling.

It's a pretty helmet, finish looks perfect. I bought the Black Cherry, and it just looks nice.

Wonderful people from Maryland?? There's none of those here, just people like us!! That and I'm PRETTY confident I'm the only one going from this group, us Beemer owners are few and far between around these parts.

Where did you find a review of the 102??

I just did a websearch for "Nolan N102 Review". Had a raft of information populate the screen!
I installed the speakers and mic today.. took it out for a ride.. and OMG was it noisy.. The cord for the headset was making the helmet TEN times noisier then it was, at least on the side the cord was on.. I'd grab it with my hand up near the helmet and it would quiet down right back to where it was.. So now I have the cord coming out of the very back of the helmet.. I'll find out tomorrow how well that works.

I'm surprised nobody has come up with a Bluetooth wireless headset (at least not that I've seen). I know they have one that will work directly with your phone, but Autocom or somebody should make a set that works with their integrator boxes and has stereo sound as well as a mic.

I'm sure they are out there.. $$$$$$$

I know Autocom has a Bluetooth adaptor, that lets you connect bluetooth devices to the intercom wirelessly but you and your helmet are still wired in.

I'm not so sure...I've been searching.

Exactly! They put the wireless interface in the wrong location. Do a wired connection from the phone to the Autocom unit and then Bluetooth from the Autocom to the helmet. Of course, I think part of the problem is that (I think) Bluetooth phones don't have a wired headset capability. So, you'd need a second Bluetooth link (which should be possible). One from the phone to the Autocom and then another from the Autocom to the helmet.

I just had to replace my phone, and got a Razor. It has blue tooth capabilities but it also does have wired headsets as well. So far I like it. I comes with a month of free NAV capability. This is speach nav so no need to look at the screen as you drive. I have only tested it once so far but it is accurate as far as determining your position.

Side note. Verizon doesn't have as strong a signal here as Cingular, or the phone doesn't. Reception has not suffered too much.

Just Googled bluetooth + Motorcycle helmet and got several pages.
Yeah, there's also a Motorola one. However, both are mono earphone and are designed to work with just your phone. You need something else for GPS, radio, FRS, etc.
