Help! Devil Cat!

My Sweetest Boy
I keep Timon's nails trimmed but it doesn't seem to help. He has taken over one spot on our couch and another on our big comfy chair. I'll get him declawed one day - and definitely before we buy new furniture.

How often do you trim them? My cats' nails are blunt. They cannot do any damage. I clip them weekly or at least check them.

Once a week, sometimes I forget and two have gone by. I've been doing it since we got him - so about 3 years. He doesn't claw at anything but the two spots on the furniture.

No because I'm scared I'll clip her toe off. That's on my list of things to do today - go get some cat nail clippers and straighten that evil kitty out.

Dear V, please reread your post. It sounds like on your to do list today is clip off kittys toe.:lmao:

I had both of my cats declawed because I already tried all of other options first and none of them worked. For your information, all vets in state of Maryland WILL NOT declawed the cats no matters what. I found a vet in Indiana that will do it for $50 (including an overnight stay and medication). If you want to go for declawing after you tried all of other options first, send me a PM. You might be able to find a vet in PA, VA, etc. that will do declawing. Also, if you do decided to get declawing option, "warning" - the vets, thier staff, and cat lovers will give you a HELL about it.

I wish you a good luck and hope one of the options you find is working that you don't have to go for declawing option.

Since when? We had Moosie declawed several years ago and the vet didn't give us a problem.

Anyway, I bought the nail clipper thingie so tonight (if she ever gets tired) I'll give it a whirl.

When I tried to get my cats declawed a little over 5 years ago, the vets around here wouldn't let me. Therefore, I had to take my cats out of state to get it done. :ohwell:

I guess maybe it is who you use since each vets are different.

Oh darn, I wish I have known that you are planning to buy the nail clipper thingie because I have one that you could have at no charge.

Kiki is clawing up my whole house, so I'm trying to get her to use the scratch pad instead. I mounted a corrugated cardboard panel on the basement stairs post that she likes to destroy, about 3 feet up so she can stretch up to claw.

Next I sprinkled catnip on it in hopes it would attract her. Then I said, "Look here, Kiki..." and scratched at the pad to give her the idea.

She watched this for a minute, then went up in the kitchen to claw at the cabinets.

I scolded her and brought her down to the basement, and scratched at the pad some more. Her response was the start chewing on the scratch pad. We've been doing this for a couple of days now - how long is it supposed to take?

I really don't want to get her declawed if I can help it, but she simply cannot destroy my house with her clawing.

Please plaease PLEASE!!!! DO NOT GET YOUR CAT DECLAWED!!! Its her best means of defense if she should happen to get out. You can get caps put on her nails that fall off after I dunno 3 months or something....

The best thing is a squirt gun or spray bottle of water. If you catch her scratching, spray. After a while when you show her the gun/bottle she will stop.

Good luck!

See Vrai? This is what I had been dealing with for years for having my cats declawed. They are not the ones that have to deal with the cats that still stratches everything in sight no matters what you do (trimming, squirting water, caps - it does fall off too easily and cats fight to have it get back on, saying "no no" over and over, clapping your hands, shaking empty soda cans with pennies in it, etc.) and ruining your furniture, carpets, house, doors, etc. Replacing your furniture, carpets, house/drywalls, doors, stairway cases, etc. are very expensive to replace. It is much cheaper to get the cats declawed.

My cats have never gone outside. They both do not like to go outside and I had left the doors open by an accident (wind blew it wide open). The cats never even tried to bolt outside when they had a chance. They actually are afraid to go outside.

:lmao: I've tried this on my cat, it doesn't work. He likes the water.

Put some listerine in the water in the bottle. About 1 part listerine to 4 parts water. They HATE the taste and it won't hurt them and they definitely get the message! My cats see me even reach for the water bottle they disappear and quick! :lmao:

You must keep in mind that every cat is different. Kitty tries to claw the couch but I use the squirt method and a sharp NO! with it and she gets it. Climbing on the cars is another problem we are currently working on, she is an indoor/outdoor.

YES!!! YES!!!

Trimmed the Kiki nails last night, which she seemed to actually enjoy. This morning I hear "scratch...scratch...scraaaatch...", went downstairs and she was using the scratch pad I made for her.

:yahoo:

Cross your fingers!

 Just keep trimming them and the cuticle will actually get closer to the paw and you can get the nails so you can keep them fairly short. Did you do the back ones too?

No, just the front ones. And just the four regular claws - should I do the lower one too?

I just nipped the tip off, probably could have taken more but didn't want to get carried away until I was comfortable with the clipping. How often should I trim?

Oh my yes! Make sure you do the "thumb." Once you get comfortable with where the cuticle is, you'll be able to take more off and you'll get fairly quick about it.

Thanks for your support. :huggy:

I'm so tired of vets and other people yelling at me for getting my cats declawed. They are actually telling me that my cats' personality have changed and blah blah blah. In fact, thier personality have not changes at all. They are much happier than before because they can actually enjoy being around us and not getting yelled at for ruining my couches, carpet, furniture, etc.

I sure hope you can correct your cat's problem about climbing on the car.
