Help with Rap Music CDs

My 14 year old has requested rap music CDs for Christmas this year. I don't listen to it but have discussed the 50 Cents CD he wanted and why he wasn't going to get it. I am willing to get him rap music within reason. Anyone familiar with rap groups that are not in the 50 Cents category? Black Eyed Peas maybe?

If you don't get it for him a friend will just burn him a copy of theirs. Try Walmart though they only sell censured versions.

And then Dixie will have the opportunity to show her son how a responsible parent acts by confiscating it and throwing it away.

I'll second the censored version, but those might be a bit risque, too, because they take out the cusswords but the gist of the song is still there.

I asked him about that this morning and he said that their parents won't buy it either. He's mildly retarded and autistic spectrum Tigerlily - it doesn't occur to him to be sneaky about it. And if I ask him well what they listening to he just says I don't know - rap music. He's got Will Smith which is not too far out but he's looking to branch out. (My taste runs to Carlos Santana - cannot seem to convince him it's rap  )

I don't think the Black Eyed Peas cd is bad.

Ok - I admit I'm older and pretty much only listen to the radio to/from wherever. I"ve only heard one song by them (to the best of my knowledge) Let's Get It Started which I liked - is that an old song? Any recommendations on CDs by them that might be suitable for a pretty impressionable kid.

When I was 14, and I'm going to date myself her...I asked Grandpa for the Woodstock "Country Joe and the Fish" 8-track for x-mas. He bought it for me , listened to the "GIVE ME AN F, GIVE ME A U, GIVE ME A C, ect. 8-track straight to trash. Never did get it. Hey, I lived and got over it. Dont be afraid to censor your kids.

Remember when that used to be a bad word instead of normal everyday conversation!

MC Hammer? Run DMC? Classic stuff there. It'd probably be new to him.

I forgot about MC Hammer (the guys I used to work with called it rap music for white people). Is that really rap? What do 14 years olds listen to? Anyone with 14 year olds out there?

It's rap. It's just not "gangsta" rap.
But if you want some 'cleaner' rap groups and your son doesn't have a strong preference, I'd suggest a look through the 80s bins. :yay:

I didn't think liberals believed in censoring. That whole First Amendment thing. You know diversity and all, you certainly don't want your kid to grow up straight laced and totally white. Doesn't he need the exposure to the strife of the black man, hip hop culture, gansta stuff and to feel the anger at "the man"?
