Doesn't he need the exposure to the strife of the black man, hip hop culture, gansta stuff and to feel the anger at "the man"?
She should just get him a cat.

Who are these people?

You can check out the links on the site. Most hip-hop has bad/questionable language. If you are concerned with that you should check out the cd's at wal-mart as suggested.

I wouldn't buy a 50 cent CD period! Or anyone else that glamorizes death, drug use, etc. Although there are some rap artists that do not use profanity, they are not widely known because that's not what the "public" wants.

---I would play it safe and buy something that has various artists such as "That's What I Call Music". Just my opinion :howdy:

Check out the new release section of walmart and such.
:yeahthat: Wal-mart has all the music they sell censored. So all the bad words are out. Although the context is still there "slappin da ho's" and whatnot...

The "NOW 20" CD is out as well. I remember my little step-bro used to like those NOW CD's cause they had a good mix of all the popular music.

The latest Black Eyed Peas is ok, there are still some naughty words in it.

Nickel could probably help you out with a good selection.

*EDIT* There is also a good following of Christian Rap that is supposed to be pretty cool. I hear some have a good hook or two. :whiteboyactinlikeheknowsaboutrap:

I second the Kanye West recommendation. He raps about social stuff at least some of the time(I haven't heard all his songs) and the songs actually sound pretty good to non-rap fans. Most 14 year olds swear anyways, so I don't think uncensored stuff would influence them or shock them. But as others have said, 50 cent and ludacris have some content you not might want your kid to hear. But if they are mature enough to not think shooting someone for laughing at your sneakers is an acceptable form of behavior, then anything mainstream(Ludacris, 50 Cent, Eminem) is certainly okay.

If you go to www.azlyrics.com you can sample the lyrics of any artist mentioned in this thread. It should give you an idea of what we're talking about.

Did you ask him what rap CDs he wants? You may just want to buy the ones he wants (if they're questionable) at Wal Mart. That way he gets the CD he wants, and you have the peace of mind that he's not listening to a ton of cursing. A person's musical tastes are very personal, it may not be a very good idea to just go out and buy him a rap CD. The rap genre has branched out quite a bit, and encompasses every end of the spectrum. I love the new Black Eyed Peas CD, but he may not consider that "rap", and as Dustin said, there is still questionable language.

If he doesn't care what you get him, as long as it's rap, I'd suggest going to a music store, looking in the rap section, and picking out a few new (check the release dates) CDs that don't have the "Parental Advisory" label.

I'd recommend Kanye West as well, however his CDs also have explicit language. The message behind his music is wonderful compared to say, 50 Cent, so if you want something positive, you could buy that CD from Wal Mart.

Ask him if he has any preference, and I may be able to give you a little more insight.

OK first I agree wit the whole preference thing! Don't get him into 50 period(ppl get shot everyday nothing to glorify :lalala: )!!I would recommend Kanye West also. I don't really listen to him but I did get his 1st album and it was pretty good!! I would also recommend Ludacris cuz he does fun raps and I like his word play!! He should be ok wit the copy from wal-mart!! I would also like to say ICP and Twiztid is Garbage!! You should get him Bone Thugs N Hamony too! E. 1999 Eternal is there best album but may be more than you want for your son but the the clean versions of their albums "Art of War" and "Thug World Order" should be great!!! The are the complete oppisite of the album titles. That's my favorite group I wouldn't tell u no lies :flowers: !!!! Plus they rap so fast he wouldn't catch the words anyways!!
Black Eyed Peas are good!! I've followed them since the 1st cd! Great listen!!
I would try out Mos Def's newest album "The Perfect Stranger" also! He is right up there wit Santana IMO! He's a mix of rock/rap/jazz ...........everything!! NOt many other out that don't curse alot or ar even worth mentioning but here are some others

Outkast
Sean Paul- reggae but his new CD is hott!!!
LIL Bow Wow
lil romeo
Nick Cannon-

Dixie I listen to everything and I must say Santana is very good! He did do a song with Wyclef Jean and 2 R&B singers called "Maria Maria." I think he did more collaberations with other rap artist but Wyclef is the only one I can think of!! I wanna hear a Thunder Rolls remix with him and Garth Brooks. That would be a CLASSIC!!!

Also I hate when Ppl say Hammer is rap for "white People." I still bump my M.C. Hammer all the time and I'm black! And I rap!!Not like Hammer lol! I hate when ppl say certain music is for certain ppl....It's UNIVERSAL!!!

I forgot about them...I don't know about Lil Romeo, but I do not that Bow Wow stays clean on his albums, so that would be a good way to go. Outkast is good too, I have most of their albums. Sometimes the language is a little iffy, but if you buy the censored version, he probably wouldn't know the difference. I also have the Nick Cannon CD, it's a little on the poppy side, but it's cute, and definitely clean. :yay:

Thanks for all the suggestions, researching lyrics this weekend. I don't know what he wants Nickel, as I said he's mildly retarded, autistic spectrum, and he doesn't really know. I think it's more a high school, trying to fit it type thing. He's friendly with some kids who apparently are accepting of him/his disabilities and they all listen to rap on their cd players on the bus. It's never occured to him to ask who they're listening to.

Scrilla - Santana! Now there's the sexist man alive! Him and Garth Brooks never thought of that but I saw Garth Brooks at his first comeback conference in Atlanta. Thunder Road the long version was amazing. Thanks for the suggestions I think I'm going to try the reggae as well.

Im On 1.
I can't beleive what Im reading!!! :lmao:

DIXIE DONT LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE!!! :lalala:

A 14 year old should not be listening to any of the artists in this thread. It doesn't matter that they are edited, they are still talking about violence and sex.

I suggest:

Kanye West
Bow Wow
Nick Cannon
Common

and even with some of their songs you want to be careful with.

and can I ask why he wants rap???

It's because that's what the other kids listen to; he's got learning disabilities and wants to fit in (I guess the two don't necessarily go hand in hand - you can want to fit in w/o learning disabilities - it's just a lot more difficult for him). I'm not that fond of rap but some of the stuff is pretty good - I like some of what I've heard of Black Eyed Peas, I like most of Will Smith, I loved MC Hammer's stuff, it's the gangsta stuff I want to avoid. Besides isn't it a rite of passage that you're supposed to hate the music your child likes? BTY how's your nephew? Going okay I hope?

My 14 year old has requested rap music CDs for Christmas this year. I don't listen to it but have discussed the 50 Cents CD he wanted and why he wasn't going to get it. I am willing to get him rap music within reason. Anyone familiar with rap groups that are not in the 50 Cents category? Black Eyed Peas maybe?

Kanye West, Twista, Bow Wow. Good luck!
