I have a 1991 ford ranger.# I am having problems with it not starting up.# i have to jump it everytime.# it now has a new battery and a new altinator.# I still have to jump it to get it started.# I am a single woman trying to do this on my own.# My sons are helping but we haven't found what the problem is yet.# One of my sons says its the terminals because they are in bad shape.# One says it might be the starter?# Can anyone give me some ideas on what to try next?#

Thanks for any help in advance.

Clean the terminals. You can do that by pouring a coke over them, then rinsing.

Something is discharging your battery.
Since you've replaced the battery and alternator, you should be charging when the car is running.
Since it starts with a jump, it's not the starter.

Check to make sure the cables connected to the battery are tight. If you can wiggle them by hand, get a wrench and tighten them.

I would check the cables, make sure they are clean and tight on the battery and check to make sure the ground cable is connected and clean on the opposite end as well.

You may also want to get someone to put a voltmeter on your battery as the truck is running to make sure its receiving the current from the alternator. As mentioned above, if you have a fusible link thats blown, the batter will not be getting charged as it should be.

Stop by AutoZone. Explain everything to them. Ask them to check it out. They should be able to put a meter on it and tell you where you are losing it at. If it's a cheap fix you can choose to buy it there and maybe they will help you out. If it seems to be a pricey fix, say over 50 bucks or so. Then maybe just hold tight and come back here with what they say and maybe we can point you to a few other alternatives.

Like aps says it sounds like a loose battey terminal connection and when you are putting the jumper cables on you are finally making contact. I suspect it is just dirty/loose battery cables as the others and your son pointed out.

ok never mind i googled what a fusible link was. now i just have to know what fuse to look at? lol

a blown fusible link should be easy to identify. Just give them a gentle pull one by one, it one is blown it should stretch more thsn the others and may possibly look some what burnt.

I would also check the terminals/cable and make sure that the new alternator you got is working properly. I have gone through like 3 az alternators in a week, and when i finally just got an OEM part, i had no more problems.

The Autozone tips is the best. They will bring a machine out to your car and run a test for free ....... in hopes to sell you some parts. If you live near Waldorf I can check it out or change parts for you tonight or tomorrow.
