Yes, they know. They also know that there aren't enough funds in our schools. Let's just be thankful it is candy bars instead of junk to stick on your desk.

I didn't even look to see what they were selling. It went directly from the backpack to the trash can.

I hate those fund raisers. If we all quit buying that crap, maybe one day they will quit pushing it on us. I used to drive a school bus so I even got hammered before most parents.

Eventually my children knew to not even bring them home. They went in the school's trashcan instead of mine.

As a senior adult I just can't grasp what has become of us. I never had to solicit while going to school, I received a very good education, the teachers were happy with their pay, taxes took care in providing all school supplies and now today it's a completely different story. Very little of the above applies today. What really irks me is my youngest is 36 yet I still pay taxes to put kids through school. Back in my day Girl Scouts were the only ones to knock on the door and sell a good product and I still support them today. Some school kid comes trying to sell a pizza today and they are sent on their way.

At least in public school its not mandatory. For years I had to do fundraisers for private school and if you didn't participate you had to write off a nice big check.

We got an automated call from our kids school the day prior to the flyers coming home. Said that if we didn't want our kids to "participate" in the fundraiser, to send a note to the school with the kids. It was nice to not have those extra two pieces of paper to recycle.

Our daughter was singled out in class as "not wanting the school to get new computors" by the teacher. Big mistake on that teachers part. Hubby went to that school and set them all straight! the teacher, the principal and the school board. Our daughter was a 9 yo student, not a door to door salesman. She would not be knocking on strangers doors, We would not be draging her toddler brothers out to accompany her, and Hubby, a senior enlisted man would not be making fellow sailors feel as if they had to buy something, and no, there were no family or friends to sell this crap to.

I told all the teachers that we don't sell the junk. If they needed school supplies, send a note home with my kid and we'd take care of it. Would rather spend $20.00 on school supplies than $20.00 on some crappy candle so the school can get $1.39 to buy supplies with.

I'm glad parents are standing up to this. I remember when we, as kids, had to sell that crap. And it was crap. Magazine drives, candy drives, and whatever else. And THEN we got this huge kit from the Boy Scouts we had to sell at Christmas time. I hated doing it and you could see that people didn't want to buy this stuff but did anyway 'cause they felt sorry for you.

They try to guilt the kids with parties or prizes if every kid sells (X) number of stuff. Of course the kids will want the pizza party or whatever but it's the parents who have to sell the stuff. They won't even let the kids go door to door anymore.

If the school would ask for flat donations I bet it would be well received, they'd probably make more also. If I bought something for $10 they're lucky if the school gets $5. I'd gladly give $10 per year (or quarter for that matter) just to avoid the hassle.

Exactly!

I, kwillia, have decided to hold my own school fundraiser to support schooling expenses for my first born, the sunshine of my life. I promise your donation will not result in receiving anything mundane, useless or made by the Chinese.

Nomoney has graciously offered to act as treasurer and is the financial collecting point. Please PM Nomoney with your PAYPAL information.

Thank you for your support.
