High School Football Rivalries

Can someone advise on some good high school football rivalries in southern Maryland? The kind that results in much trash talk between the two schools? Those of you from the Oxon Hill area may recall the heated rivalry between Friendly H.S. and Oxon Hill H.S. What similar rivalries in southern Maryland are there?

I may or may not be dating myself...

La Plata vs Thomas Stone

Thanks! I'll have to see about perhaps going to see them play. There is a certain amount of intensity in high school and college football rivalries that you don't feel in the pros, where money dominates.

LaPlata/Stone used to be a good rivalry...no more

Last 5-10 years LaPlata couldn't beat Girl Scout Troop 383.

Not to sound like the old man that used to have to walk 10 miles to school in a foot of snow, but I don't think they have high school rivalries around here like they used to. Maybe this is because it used to be that if you lived in a certain neighborhood, you would generally go to whichever high school was closest to your home. Now, however, at least in Charles County, it is commonplace for students to be bussed to a school 20 miles away from them when there is a school just up the street. Thus, neighborhoods and communities are not as loyal to certain schools as they used to be, and heated rivalries are less likely to form.

Definitely the biggest rivalry game in St. Mary's in the Great Mills vs Leonardtown football game.

Nah. Chopticon vs Great Mills. Come for the game stay for the fight. Every time CHS hosted GMHS, GM supporters started trouble in the parking lot win or lose. That's why we have so many police officers at those games now, to stop it before it starts.

Good point. Kids living behind Leoandartown HS get transported to Great Mills. Kids in Lexington Park get driven to Leonardtown. BUT, there is nothing like going to one of these games. The term intense rivalry applies. These teams may not rank up there against the major Metro power houses, but they show up to play each other for 'County' bragging rights. It IS fun.

mmm, let me see. My son is told by the coach to take some other players with him when he walks to the concession stand. I happened to walk up just as a really bright Chopticon kid is screaming obscenities at the fully dressed out players - with helmets on. Very bright. Had to step in when the chin straps started getting snapped on.
Then of course the famous teacher screaming: "GET THE **** OFF MY FIELD" incident comes to mind.
Must be all of GMHS's problem of course....miserable rabble, let them eat crabcakes.

Memories are long in a small county. These are fun rivalries that you have to experience.

That's what makes these games so much fun. You get away from the million dollar dullsville games and back to the sandlot "Who's bigger - badder - meaner" team bragging rights.
We seem to be trying to stifle the school pride in our kids by making it all so "Politically Correct". A little pride goes a long way.
Not saying we should have riots instead pep rallies, but who remembers the last memorable pep rally?:killingme

I grew up in an area where the school districts were independent of the government (county / township). Unless you moved, you knew your high school team from the day you entered the system. In elementary school we were able to buy a "season ticket" pack for students. This meant that Moms, Dads and kids all went to the game on Saturday (or Friday night) - few schools had lights so it was mostly Saturday.

Trust me, year in, year out, the rival schools would "prank" each other. Painting, removing or otherwise decorating the rival schools property or mascot.
Given tht it was a daytime game AND parents were in attendance, pre, post and in game fights almost never happened.

Oh, and what's with players going to the concession stand? We never left the field. Even at half time. Whatever we needed, food, drink, etc., was provied by the team.
