It's been there for quite some time, actually. I'm not sure when it was started, but know it was there in 2000, and has been since. I'm sure it was started long before the, though. Crazy stuff...
it was at lhs in 94

First I would like to say that the students who went to GMHS and went on to be teachers certainly do NOT work there they mostly all work in Calvert. As for the NO TOLERANCE bullcrap in Calvert its a lie. My daughter goes to Southern Middle and was assaulted by a boy student. Mind you we are not talking about a small situation ,my daughter was knocked completely unconcious by this child. Guess what his punishment was? In school suspension!! Thats Calvert county's answer to everything. She was also bullied in elementary school by a girl who crossed over to Middle school with her. Same punishment given. The principal at her middle school told me this is the punishment given for everything because suspension is a vacation. One thing I can give St. Mary's the school system sucks BUT where violence is concerned they always call the police and I think this should be protocol in every school system. Apparently the schools will not take care of so let the police handle it.

I think Sheardelight makes an excellent point about getting the police involved. No child should have to be subjected to abuse at school especially from another child. I can recall the police coming to the school a few times while I was in High School.

I think it's sad because most of the trouble makers are repeat offenders. If the same kids are misbehaving and interrupting classes all the time, then I think they need to be kicked out (for good.) I think being suspended all the time is BS anyway.

Oppsss...sorry folks. I have to retract one of my statements from a previous post "GMHS students went on to to become teachers at GMHS so they must have learned something there...."

I guess it should say "GMHS students must have learned something if they went out to become teachers."

I forgot what I had originally said and had to go back and look. Damn....I hate it when that happens.

This kid at church goes to Leonardtown and he hates it. He says it's full of drugs and nudity and sneaker thieves. He said he wore flip flops to school for a whole week so everybody could see what his feet looked like and now nobody wants to steal his sneakers. He still has problems with kids who try and give him drugs or show him their nudity or punch him until he passes out. He says that school needs to have the Ten Commandments back but he says it's hard to be a Christian there and one time some bully tried to make him eat his Bible. That's all I know about that school and some other kid down the street said they have good lunches, especially salisbury steak.

I believe our school system is terrible. It is unbelieveable to me that schools have child care set ups for students. Why do our tax dollars go for this? When my son was attending GMHS, There was not enough text books to go around. Therefore, when a test needed to be studies for he could not bring home a book to study with. Shouldn't we be more concerned with supplying the necessary books and supplies for classes instead of setting up child care? He no longer attends GMHS by our choice. I don't think our children learn anything in the schools except fighting, sex, drugs, etc... I totally agree that it is the parents job to do most of the teaching. Teachers have their hands full trying to control the disruptive students. I also believe some parents, not all by any means, send their children to school each day so they don't have to be around them. This is a subject that really bothers me.

Wiseowl...I know the feeling, the subject is upsetting to me as well. I feel bad for the teachers, but I put the blame on the parents that feel school is a daycare and the schoolboard.

I know, when I first started working in schools, the textbook issue was the thing that astounded me the most. It's so disheartening when you're trying to teach something and you can't even give the kids a book to take home. I have always been suprised that the districts down here were in this shape-- I don't understand why, in a community so rich with growth and new business, we can't afford the basics.

I graduated from Great Mills in 2001 and the daycare had been there for about 21/2 years. They have the kids that are taking child care classes work in the daycare. I wouldn't put my son in the daycare until he could talk, and even then I only kept him in for about two weeks. The prices are really, really cheap. I think when I was there it was 75 for the month and then you got a deduction for grades and attendance. I still have the receipts from when my son was there, 14.25 for two weeks.
