High Intensity Interval Training

"High-Intensity Interval training (HIIT) is an exercise strategy that is intended to improve performance with short training sessions.

A HIIT session involves a warmup period, several short, maximum-intensity efforts separated by moderate recovery intervals, and a cooldown period. The period of alternating effort and recovery intervals typically lasts a total of 15 minutes." - Wiki

Has anyone tried this before? Supposedly, it's a pretty useful technique in burning fat and sparing muscle.

I do that when I'm running, in a way, I'll start out with a fast walking, jog down hills and sprint up hills, thats good as far as weight goes, not sure about muscle building.

YEAH! Last night, Lugnut reminded me about doing sprints. I used to do them a few summers ago and I've read a few articles about how multiple short sprints help improve endurance while building muscle (Remember Michael Johnson? Gold Nikes).

I'm going to get back into that because I can get a little fresh air and some sun. Good Call! :yay:

Update on intervals.

War, try something like this...

30 seconds work, 30 seconds rest.

Burpees 5 intervals
Chinups 5 intervals
Pushups 5 intervals
Medicine ball overhead throw 5 intervals
20 minutes total

Get on orbital and round out the rest of the hour with cardio

Chinups: rest in the hanging position if you can't do chinups for a full 30 seconds

MB throw: Squat down with the medicine ball hanging in both hands between knees. In one motion you thrust up and backward heaving the MB over your head backwards, slamming it against a wall behind you. Turn around and catch it before it hits the ground and repeat until the interval is done.

I jut finished this and I :barf: after the intervals. :frown:

OK, I have to ask - what's a Burpee?

That is when you place your buddy about 100 yards in front of you. You both get butt naked and then you sprint up to him, plunging into his rectum. The actual burpee is the farting sound that it makes when you pull out. :roflmao:

When I use the treadmill, I run at the same constant speed for 20-40 minutes, while throwing in a few minutes of walking. Would it be a good idea to throw in some sprints? If so, how many and for how long each time?

I would probably hit a track for sprints. When I ran track we did interval training every other day and we would sprint 1/8 mile (shooting for 30 seconds) or 1/4 mile (shooting for 60 seconds). The rest period for the 1/8 mile was walking across the field and taking off again, for 1/4 mile we walked half the track and took off again. We normally did a min. of 8 of the 1/8 and 4 of the 1/4 mile. We also did steps or hills. Lots of folks :barf: on interval training days.
