When I was in school...you know...at the beginning of the dark ages...we never went back to school before labor day. I can still remember watch the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon and being so depressed cause school started the next day. I never understood why they changed it.

They moved the start date to August 30th my senior year. Prior to that, school start was the Tuesday after Labor Day.

I attended british schools for a couple years when we were stationed over there. They had some kind of schedule where we were in school for 3 terms with a week off in between and like 6 weeks off in the summer  if I remember correctly. I just remember having a mini vaca couple times throughout the school year and a very short summer. It worked.

Not sure how many kids can even work during their summer breaks now a-days. What places hire kids under the age of 18? Most retail stores do not, that I know of. But that's an honest, curious question. Where can a 16/17 yo find work besides babysitting and mowing yards?

Growing up, school always started the Wednesday after Labor Day and always ended second week of June. Of course, growing up in SoCal, the two words I never heard were "Snow Day", so the school year wasn't going to get messed up with some freakish snow storms.

Restaurants, we hire quite a few as attendants at the beach, lifeguards.

what seems a bit stupid is to start school, then within 10 days take a holiday.
The rationale for the "summer vacation" have long since moved on. Kids don't work the farm any more (okay, there is going to be one smart ass that says his kid does).
But the vast majority of kids don't have to work on the family farm. Studies have shown that there is a loss of skills from the extended time away from the class room.
The opposition to year round school is mostly from the teachers unions. If the 180 school year was spread out over 12 months there would still be opportunities for family vacations, but teachers would not be able to pick up summer work. The daycare business would not be drastically affected as the number of school days and days off would remain the same. The difference would be no 2.5 month long break. Maybe multiple 2 week breaks.

A friend and I were talking about that today. I remember when they changed it my daughter was in elementary school. That was when the week spring break was added. It never made sense to me. Let them go back after Labor Day, why do they need a full week off for spring/Easter. It always created a day care issue with me.

I wondered about that also. When did Calvert go back. I spend a lot of days at Cove Point Park this summer and many of the people working there look like they're in high school.

The Gov signed the Executive Order today. The 2017-2018 school year will start after Labor Day. It also requires the school year to end no later than June 15th.

That's good news.

My son will turn 16 in January and has already asked at Ace and Chesapeake Hills golf course about possibly getting a job there. They said they'd love to have him so fingers crossed!

Why? If you go by that rational, there would be no good time to start the school year unless the school year started after Easter. In the case of SMCPS, starting school after Labor Day will still mean that schools will by closed for a day two and a half weeks afterwards.

This is very close to what year round school was like for me in the 70's.

The teachers unions fight against school vouchers and privatization of the school system... it's to our disinterest. what are we doing to do about them? what can we do about them? As long as the dummies keep voting democrat, they will stay in power. When you vote for democrats you're voting against school choice, against allowing parents choosing to send their kid, to a good private school with school vouchers. If i'm not mistaken we pay more per student in public schools than the tuition of private schools. If we privatize it all, we don't have any of the costs nor liabilities of having a physical school system. Schools will have to compete for efficiency and cost, won't be over crowded, and have to be good at what they do to stay in business.

That's a poor comparison. Private schools get to pick and choose who gets to enroll. Public schools can't so the cost is higher. Public schools have to serve all. Special ed, kids with disabilities, behavior problems. Private schools don't have to so their cost aren't as high. If private schools were mandated to serve all, their tuition would go up.

:yay: perfect. I bussed tables starting at 14, so the day I turned 18 I was immediately bumped up to waitress. (CT law, can't be under 18 to serve alcohol, not sure about MD) And when I worked at Home Depot throughout college, they were not allowed to hire anyone under the age of 18 bc of various machines and tools most employees had to learn to use. I had heard places like Target started making that rule too, but I don't think I've verified it. Just wondering what the chances of my BF's kid getting a job when he turns 16 in a year and a half. Food Lion is within walking distance to our house, I'm hoping they do. He's already expressing interest.

Yes, must be 18 to serve alcohol in MD. My daughter works at one of the higher end restaurants on the island. She's 17 and can only expo food.

.

the next federal holiday is Nov 11, Veterans Day. All the other days the schools close are by their choice and could be dropped or reprogrammed.
Is a day off to attend the county fair really that important?
