Holy Catfish Batman!

ALTON, Ill. (AP) - It sounds like the sort of tale Mark Twain might have cooked up: A man fishing in the Mississippi River hauls in a blue catfish roughly the size of a sixth-grader. But this is no fish story. Early Sunday, Tim Pruitt caught a 124-pound blue catfish.

To get a sense of just how big that is, the state record holder was a mere 85 pounds and the world record holder tipped the scales at 121 pounds, 8 ounces

Pruitt's fish, measuring 58 inches long and 44 inches around, was swimming below the Melvin Price Lock and Dam on the Mississippi River at Alton on Saturday night when it grabbed Pruitt's line. The two struggled for more than half an hour, and at one point the fish dragged the boat carrying Pruitt, his wife and a friend before Pruitt could reel it in.

The fish has been kept alive and will be on display in a tank at the Cabela's Outfitter store in Kansas City, Kan., according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

I'd love to know what lb test he was using. Talk about great advertisement for the equipment makers.

They just told the story on ESPN. They said that the fish started pulling the boat. They're not killing the fish, it's on display at some place in Kansas City. They showed the fish swimming around. That thing is huge.

As I posted in my original post, he gave it to Cabela's for their in-store tank in K.C.

He was in the boat with his wife and kid(s). That's one STRONG fish.

That would be some good eating :yum: Those catfish can put on one hellva fight and with it being that big.....I just could not imagine reeling it in :jet: I am sure there are more that size where it came from. Back in my hometown, the larger ones tend to be around Cargil......where the farmer's take the corn, milo, soybeans, ect. Some of the stuff that spills over or onto the drive is just pushed into the river instead of rotting in the mud....

Me too, I love that movie.

Now that I think about it, they didn't catch it in the first film. They caught it in Grumpier Old Men. But ya' just can't watch the second one without watching the original first.

Ever see the films about the guys that wrestle catfish. They just sink a big box in the Mississippi and come back a few days later. Then reach down in the box and grab the catfish that moved in and wrestle them into the boat.

I've never seen either of the two movies... but if its gotta catfishn' story in it that changes EVERYTHING! I love catfishing and have even been in catfishing tournaments in Virginia, lots of fun... not much work until they hook themselves... I've even won a $$ prize for best female catch.

BTW, does anyone know what they were using for bait

yeah, but the huge giants tend to bite on other stuff.... I hate it everytime Im' fishing for bass and throwing the spinner bait out there and thinking I have a HUGE AZZ bass on the line only to find its a big and aggressive catfish. Although I realize this about part way through when I realize it never broke the water as Bass do in landing.... also, cats love shad, but last i heard its illegal in MD to fish with shad. Worms are ok, but I've just never had any luck bringing in lunkers with that  :huggy:
