Nobody's going to tell me I can't have a car up on blocks or my collection of gazing balls in MY front yard. 
Seriously, when we went to buy property for building our house, I looked at some of the subdivisions with HOA's. Some of their convenants and restrictions were ridiculous. We bought 5 acres from a private landowner and are very happy with it.

HOA's are a big deal for me. I REFUSE to live anywhere that has them, and there are TONS of really nice houses in the area that aren't governed by the HOA Nazi's.
