I'm back and had an amazing trip!! The weather was gorgeous and probably the best weather I've ever encountered. I was so sad to leave. :frown:

My husband, daughter, and her friend went to Hawaii, The Big Island, in February of this year. They felt the same way you do.

I was there for three years and was terribly sad when I left. :frown: I could never understand people who complained about being stationed in Hawaii. To me, it was like every day was like a luxurious vacation, paid for by Uncle Sam. :patriot:

Glad you had a good time. Post more pics!

Did you take some frozen peas to Hanauma bay?

No, we didn't take any frozen peas with us. But, the fish were all over the place. The current was really rough the day we went so I didn't venture out too far into the bay. Hubby has all the pictures on his GoPro camera so I don't have any to share.

Agreed - we intentionally did two tours there and would have stayed as long as I could "homestead", but I got recruited for special duty about the same time that my father passed away and we decided it was more important to be closer to family than to live in paradise. I never got tired of scenery; rainbows every day, the blue blue ocean (I could go on and on). Always felt sad for the people who couldn't see how blessed they were to be stationed there.

More pics! I am very jealous - never saw a sea turtle there! Did you make it to a luau? What was your top favorite place?

There were lots of sea turtles in the water. I went to Paradise Cove for their luau and it was okay. The first 2 hours were mainly spent drinking (watered down drinks), and waiting for dinner. After the buffet dinner the show started, which lasted for about 30 minutes. It was fun but I don't know that I'd do it again.

My favorite place was Kailua Beach. It was secluded and away from the tourists, the water was warm, and I got to spend some time w/the hubby. :)

Sorry the luau was a disappointment; it was the nicest one I went to - tho it was a few years ago. Now I'm homesick - we were married in Hawaii and had our daughter there. Glad you had a good time!

Some pictures from my trip to Hawaii last month with Thing2~

We did quite a bit in the 5 days we were there - hit most of the places mentioned in this thread as "must sees" on the island of Oahu.

We were there for the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade on Dec 7th - it was a school trip, so we had a planned itinerary for the days we were there. All in all, it was the best school field trip ever for the kids and parent chaperones. Lots of memories!

Pearl Harbor visit:

It's customary for visitors to the USS Arizona to throw the petals from their welcome Lei's into the water over the memorial.

You can see the trail of petals floating off into the harbor

We saw a "show" of customs of Hawaiian families of the area going back 100's of years. This was at the Macadamia Nut farm, but was similar to the shows at the Polynesian Cultural Center. It was quite entertaining!

December is the time for surfing on the famous Banzai Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore. There was actually a surfing competition going on while we were there.

Thankyou! We had a blast! It was a fast, but jam-packed week and we took advantage of every opportunity we could. It was so beautiful, and the weather just perfect. (in the mid 80's) No one wanted to leave! :bawl:

Thing2 turns 18 this coming Friday and graduates in June. He is looking forward to enlisting into the Navy and trying to return there sometime. I'm definitely going back again, too, but not with my son and 51 of his closest student friends next time!

Had a blast

I have met quite a few people who were stationed there. Some were back in the late 60's - early 70's, a couple in the 80's, a couple were way more recent. (2000's) Everyone says the same thing - they loved it there!

Navy had a program called Rent Plus while I was there. Uncle Sam would pay up to an additional $500 a month rent over you BAQ.
I shared a beach house on the north shore with a shipmate for the last couple of years I was there. Sand 10 yards from the back door and lobsters another 30 yards past that
