How long to cook a turkey...

I want to cook my 24 lb. UN-stuffed turkey on 325° tented with tin foil until the last half hour (removed to crisp up the skin). How many hours should it cook total?

The directions say 20 min.per lb. that means 8 hours....that seems way too long to me.

20 minutes a pound is the rule of thumb but in my experience it is much less. Do you have a probe thermometer?

I'm no help. I think I've cooked a turkey ONE time by myself in my whole life. I've always gone to family or friends' homes for Thanksgiving. Once, I cooked Thanksgiving dinner and my mom was there, so she was helping determine the doneness, etc.

But I can make a fantastic baked ham. Complete with ham gravy. :yahoo:

I know, right? I'm sure it's probably been no more than a couple. The ex wasn't fond of chicken OR turkey, so I never cooked one "just because".

As for Thanksgiving, it's just always worked out that I/we were obligated or invited to go to someone else's for that holiday. And they did the turkey.

I've prepared many a Christmas dinner, but I have always preferred baking a ham at Christmas.

Maybe I'll just have to cook a turkey my ownself soon.
