I thnk they're gonna build a Super Target, Super WalMart, Lowes, Home Depot, WaWa, Sheetz, Food Lion, Giant, McDonalds, Burger King, Popeyes, Rite Aid, Walgreens and 5 drive thru liquor stores.

Hmmm... Maybe they should just pick Waldorf up and drop it down in Hughesville?

I cant say I would have built them knowing the town is dying

Hughesville is perfect for a little Olde Towne type of environment. Restaurants, shops, street fairs, make it somewhere to while away a day. Centrally located between Waldorf and LexPark, nothing else really there, tons of room.

It's like Southern Maryland developers have never been anywhere else in their lives and never seen how other places revive their economy. In Lincoln, NE they took a blighted area down by the train station and cleaned it up - made the train station an historic landmark, renovated all the crappy warehouses and brought in shops and restaurants. I kid you not, there is a store in the Haymarket (which is what they call it) that sells nothing but licorice - no other type of candy - and they do very well.

The key is to not jack rent prices up so high that small business owners can't afford it. Every time a new shopping development is built, the rent is so crazy that only Wal-Mart, Best Buy and other big box stores can afford to go in there.

People want to spend money, but developers don't seem inclined to provide them with places to do so.

WE need a chain restaurant in northern St. Marys. There's no place to go for a drink and grub. Gimmee a Rubys, Applebee's, Fridays... SOMETHING besides Ledos & St. Marys Landing.

If I had enough money to get started, I'd buy up "downtown" Hughesville and make a shopping village, similar to the one in Salado, TX. Instead of charging rent, I'd charge tenants a percentage of their sales. I'd be rich in no time because not only would locals visit there, but it would be a destination point for out of towners.

Park your car, walk around spending your money on fudge and coffee, bric-a-brac you don't need but can't resist, have lunch to fortify yourself for more spending....

Yes we do, Ive been here for 30 years and its always off to Waldorf or Prince Frederick and now maybe LaPlata to sit down and eat. Frequent Ledo's alot, they do a nice business in Charlotte Hall and Im not a big fan of St. Mary's Landing.

Thats exactly what the "Preserve Hughesville" people (old fuddy duddy's) want to do with the rundown town. Better hurry though someone else is buying up quite a bit of the town from what I understand already and he he's got alot of money. Think he has the biggest most expensive building in town right now very hard to miss coming southbound on 5.:gossip:
