Hummingbirds?

With the warmer weather starting much earlier this year, I was wondering if anyone has seen hummingbirds yet?

I put my feeders out just in case.

Thanks for the map, Jazz.

I have a question. Are Hummingbirds territorial? Last year, I had one that wouldn’t let others near the feeder. I swear I have never noticed a bossy one in the past years.

The males are VERY territorial. I loved watching the aerial wars when I had several feeders up. One male about wore himself out every day guarding them all.

I haven't put out my feeder as yet here in Maine but it won't be much longer. We have slightly different types than down there but they are just as neat to watch. Did set out my sunflower seed feeders yesterday but haven't seen any takers as yet. I believe my cold winter is finally over and my temps are about equal to yours this past week.

The ones we had at our feeders last year were very territorial. Always had one or two chasing the other ones off.

Yep! Ours are as well - that's why "they" say to hang feeders on opposite sides of your house or yard so that the other birds can't see them. Certain hummingbirds will possess the feeder in the front, and the others will take over the feeder in the back.

I tried that but it never worked for me so I just hang them all in one place and let the hummingbirds fight it out!

Last year we had a feeder on our front porch and there's a tree nearby. One of the birds would sit the tree guarding the feeder. When another bird tried to feed the first bird would chase it away then fly back to the tree waiting for the next victim. Really never fed from the thing, but just guarded it as though it belonged to him.

I thought this was pretty entertaining and funny at first. Problem is, the nectar goes bad after a while and it wasn't getting emptied. So I had to chase that dominant bird away so others could get in and feed.

Consider planting some red flowers like salvia for them along with your sugar feeders. I usually have a lot of potted flowers on my porch/deck and flowers in my raised beds as well; and attract a lot of them and flutterbys, too!
You have to be diligent about keeping your feeders clean or you could be doing more harm than good...I find it much easier to plant flowers they like.

Irene devastated our neighborhood. When I walked back the next morning there were hummingbirds everywhere. They were alive. :yay:

Have you ever been buzzed by one?

I hope they will come back after the storm.

Feeders are going out tomorrow. One in the front and one in the back.

Yeah, they are agressive little buggers that try to intimidate me back into the house!
It usually works!

I have a porch and they typically don't fly under it or I'm pretty sure they'd chase me off also.

My step-mother has several gardens at home and at church so I tend to get the overgrowth every year. That is why I have TONS of flowers & the hummingbirds love all I have planted. Last year, we never saw so many. We felt like we were in the middle of a Alfred Hitchcock story. One day I walked outside and heard my husband yelling "keep it up you a-holes and I'll smash your feeders." :lmao:
