Husky on the loose

I'd think about putting up a fence, or a run for her. We have a Husky too, and Huskies are excellent at figuring out how to get out!

She is at it again! She was there one minute, went to put the kid in the shower and was gone the next so something is getting her attention. SO and I spent almost 2 hours looking for her last night. She has her collar with current rabies tag and her microchip ID number on it. I am going to work on fliers today and call around. Not to mention more looking this afternoon. This dog is going to be the death of me one way or another.

(I'm pretty sure I am going to get blasted as a bad pet owner, but I have never in my whole life had a dog with such determination and drive to get out of the yard and I am at a loss on how to contain her and even prevent her from breaking the collar and/or runner. Our older husky broke two choke chains when he was a puppy, so I am afraid she is on that same path)

On a side note (Chrystee): We have too much property to fence in and the way the house is situated on the property it would be hard to do a run area. So we are contemplating blocking in part of the horse pasture (no horses use it) to give her adequate running area.

You do know that the breed is know for escaping, right?

I am very aware of that and that is why I am trying to figure out a better way to let her outside. Being that I cannot afford to fence in our whole property (not to mention, we don't own the house, so why pay that kind of money only to leave it behind) and the backyard is too small to create something for just her when we have two other dogs to worry about. And the other dogs could careless about trying to get out.

Walk her on a leash or find another home for her. Doesn't sound like you are equipped to handle the breed. :yay:

I have done that and I am going to go back to doing that until I can find a better solution. Not to start a fight or anything, but I have two other huskies, if I had an inkling I couldn't handle the breed I wouldn't have gotten her. The only time the other two have gotten out have been when the kids haven't been paying attention to what they were doing and they ran past them.

Can't you put her on a tie out for those times when you can't walk her on a leash?

We use a 30ft runner that leads straight to our back porch. We used to have a steel cable from two oak trees at our old house, but when we moved there werent any trees suitable enought to do that, and the dogs seemed fine with the runner. But it is apparent the youngest one has other intentions right now...

I leash walk mine. We are out and back within two minutes (I try to get them a good walk in too, weather withstanding).

Do you ever bring them to the dog park to get some of their energy out? Some huskies are consumed with escaping.

dont let the know it alls bother you. If it were up to them no one would be allowed to have a dog unless they approved of it first......

I have given more thought to the leash walking, but with three dogs, it is going to be very time consuming and add taking care of two 6 year olds on top of it... Thats why we loved the runner and this is the fire under our butts to figure out a better more permanent solution that doesnt cost us an arm and a leg...

As for the dog park, I have never taken her there I normally attach two 20ft runners together and tether her to a wooden post in the middle of our field and run around with her for about an hour here and there, but with the cold and the massive amount of snow, it just wasnt possible these past few weeks

They don't bother me, I had a strong feeling something was going to be said, and I even stated it in my post. Just a little annoying, but everyone is entiteld to their own opinions...

Annoying? What's annoying is seeing the same people post about the same dog getting loose time and time again, then making excuses for why it happens! Some people try to post advice or help, and more excuses are made! People who make comments don't care about hurting your wittle feelings, they care about the poor dog who could get hit by a car, shot, trapped, starved, frozen, etc. all because the owners were too inconvenienced to take time out of their busy lives to properly care for them.

I am not inconvenienced. I posted in good faith and it got turned around into I'm a bad pet owner. Which I knew was going to be said because thats the way people are here. Yes she is a puppy and a husky at that, but seriously, every dog is different. The second time was beyond my control, her collar broke, and this time, the runner broke. Oh, wait, the last two things I said were excuses right? I am very aware that I need to leash walk her until I can find a better solution. But right now, I just want my dog back.

Since when is finding the dog a new home advice or help? Maybe in their eyes, but the dog is part of my family and I am not going to give her up because she has escaped a few times... I am going to do what I need to do to make sure it doesnt happen again.

That is a bs excuse. I owned a Husky that was a known escape artist when I was renting - at the time I owned 2 other dogs as well. I built a fenced in area just for the Husky (at the rental property). It was the only thing that worked and it may be your only option with that dog. I took the fence with me when I left.

There ya go. Go to Lowe's and buy some t-posts and wire fence. You can pull it all up and take it with you when you leave. If the dog is such a valued member of the family, it'd be worth spending the money to make sure she's safe. :yay:
