We adodpted a wonderful energetic pup to a family just about a month ago. The third day after they had him home the woman called to say he was digging up her yard, jumping on her children, jumping on her counters (!?) and creating a problem because he slept in her daughter's bed but then would be bad during the night. After going through the usual, "he's a pup, he needs supervision, don't give him so much freedom, crate him at night, don't let the children be the ones who train him, etc." She said she understood and knew he would get better as he got older. At that time I said if you can't keep him please return him. Two weeks later we get a call saying she thinks he is dying because he wouldn't eat his food and her neighbor said he had heartworms and they gave him two heartworm preventives (he's 6 months old). I explained to her that her neighbor would not know he had heartworms because there are no visible signs and it takes 5 months for the larvae to develop into heartworms, etc. and that, yes, she may have surely killed him with an overdose. He didn't die, she brought him by our house and he ate dog food out of our hands. Two weeks later I get a call from the shelter that they think one of our dogs is there and it's his last day. I went to the shelter and they returned him to us. When he came out he was wagging his tail and so happy to see us. He's been home two days now and he appears to be healthy. With a little retraining we're hoping to get him back to the pup he was the day he left our farm. I'm so angry at this person for not calling us to return the dog to us and for not caring that he would have surely died if the shelter had not contacted us. Shame on her! Thank God the shelter called. How can people raise children and not be able to raise a puppy!??

Glad you got your pup back. Hope things work out for the little guy.

Of the 4 pups we had, 3 found homes and all 3 came back. Some of the excuses were unreal especialy since they were pups.

Pup 1...couldn't be consold. Returned less then 24 hours later. This one really surprized us. She was a puppy just taken from her mother. -Of coarse she's going to cry a little.
Pup 2...would not stop chewing or digging out of the fence and can't seem to house train her. Returned 2 months later.- Obviously they didn't spend enough time with her.
Pup 3...people were moving and claimed they just couldn't take her. Returned last week after almost 5 months. Yet, they took their other dog with them.- I think the puppy phase wore off and they just didn't want to bother with her anymore.

The first 2 have found new homes and all seems well. The 3rd is here now.

We're just thankful they called us first (as agreed) and they wern't taken to the shelter.

Pics of pup 3 and her momma.

Unbelieveable and wharf rat,

What you do is so important. This quest you are on must break your heart all the time. Here is an update on my animals: All three are rescue dogs, two were here since puppyhood. They are members of our family and we love and play with them everyday. They have been trained (hard work) but are still not perfect (no one is). Both puppies kept us up nights, we kept them.

This is not tooting my own horn, but telling you a happy story about three rescue dogs that found a good home.

Can anyone else post their stories? Please do :flowers:

People are just that shallow I know. I often wonder how many rescue animals have been taken to the shelter unknown to the person/group that rescued that animal only for it to be put to sleep. I have even had a few people call me and ask me to take an animal that they no longer want and quite often those animals have come from a rescue and I have even gotten the paperwork with the animal. I mean come on people. Those people knew that they were in the wrong and did not want to face you even though it sounds as though you did everything to help them adjust with the puppy. They just did not want to be bothered is all. I am glad you got the puppy back. I had been thinking about this same scenario before and was wondering about microchipping all rescue animals. I know it is so costly but I wonder if there could be grants made available to cover such. I know some of the rescues do this already but some of the rescues just cannot afford that expense on top of everything else but I think it is almost becoming mandatory to protect the animals. Kudos to you for looking out for those who cannot help themselves!

Have you called the person(s) and asked them why they dumped their pet at a shelter?

I adopted my kitty about 2.5 years ago from a local rescue. I still email them updates and pictures so they know he is WELL taken care of and loved. It only takes a minute of my time and I know they are thrilled that he went to such a loving family.

I got my last dog from a rescue. He was a sheltie. When we got him, he was about ten lbs. underweight, and had worn hair off his back from being in a cage that was too small. He gained weight, and his fur grew back. He was a beautiful dog, and we think he may have been shown because of the way he behaved.

We took an obedience class with him - to train us, he already knew how to obey.

As he aged, he became arthritic and lost his hearing. He was nearing the point of becoming miserable, and we were about to have to make the hard choice. Then my mother in law accidentally ran over him.

Someone adopted a dog from my local shelter (a pretty coonhound), and returned her before getting her spayed because she (the adopter) was pregnant, and couldn't handle the smell of a dog. :ohwell: Turns out, the dog got pregnant, so now the shelter has 9 new puppies. :jameo:

Oh, thanks for that touching story.

The litter of puppies and momma that I fostered last year is a great success story.

The momma dog had her puppies under a porch during one of the warm spells in December. Animal control found them, and contacted my rescue group. I couldn't say no to these little angels. I fostered them, and loved them for the time I had them. All 8 of them went to good homes, and they absolutely love the puppies. I have seen pictures of the pups as they have grown and I get all warm. Momma went to a wonderful home in PA and is adored. I really wished I had kept one of the little pups, but at the time I just couldn't.

As a rule, yes people will give up an animal for any stupid excuse they can give. I have gotten dogs back for stupid reasons also.

As opposed to what? Spittin' it out yourself? All pets are adopted.

Once again...acting like an ignorant ass. Haven't filled your stupid ho ##### quota of the day yet? Not all pets are adopted. Some are bought.

Just like babies. You pay all the fees to adopt. It's still adopting. So, GFY. You have no sense of humor.
