I have finally had it with the lack of a good rock station in this part of the world. Don't get me wrong, I like all kinds of music, but my heart will always be with rock. I like screaming guitar solos, pounding drums, and loud vocals. But ever since The Rocket stopped being The Rocket, I've had to resort to burning CD's every other week just to keep my drive to work fresh. And when I do listen to the radio, it's not a local station, but a station across the bay in Cambridge! And all they play is that teeny bop Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus garbage that I am so sick to death of!

The end of my rope came today when driving back from lunch. I happened to have the radio on, but nothing good was coming out of it. Then I heard what has to be the biggest piece of crap song I've ever heard. Single Ladies by Beyonce. I don't give a crap what Kanye West says, that song is the worst song of ALL TIME. I had never heard it all the way through before, but after I listened to it, I wanted to slit my wrists. In the 10 plus years I've been out on my own, I've never lived anyplace that didn't have a decent rock station. Even Maine had 94.3 WCYY. The Rocket wasn't bad. Wasn't the best rock station ever, but it was alright. But after a year of listening to pop dance tunes with stupid hooks, songs that sound rehashed and recycled, I've finally reached my #$%^ point of aggrivation.

I've had my car for three years, and it's always had a XM antenna on it, but I had never activated it.....until tonight. Now I got me some satellite radio, and it was awesome being able to rock out on the way home from work. I don't think I have ever been as excited about anything else in my life. As I was flipping through different channels and hearing awesome music....all I could think was...."I wanna make love to my radio". But I didn't want to make a mess, so I settled for rocking out to some great tuneage.

But it sucks though. This place needs a fricking rock and roll station. And the Rocket could have been good, but there was a few things they could have done to make it better, and to build a better listening base. But this crap they play now....just makes me want to /wrists.

I mean seriously. I'd rather watch Two Girls, One Cup then listen to radio here in SOMD anymore. Thank God for XM radio! Now I just wanna drive my car just to listen to it. I don't have to go nowhere...I just want to jam out on some awesome rock tunes!

this may just be a dumb question, my insomniac mind is to tired to conjure a decent answer too..but why don't we have a good station? Im pretty young by old rock standards but I will always be a die hard 'classic rock' fan. DC101 is ok by me most times, but the first time i heard something to the effect of Miley Cyrus or similar on it; I stopped listening as well. I was in heaven over the holiday weekend when they played the best/top/greatest whatever 500 rock songs.

I am wondering why all these local stations tank? I am a stay at home mom getting a BS in Construction Management to give you an idea of my technical skill or ability...but I do have an idea. I would think the local college offers some sort of degree in radio type stuff. I guess its broadcasting, or communications maybe? I think they also offer a degree in advertising. I know enough to understand that in order to have a radio station, there has to be revenue to support the royalties for playing songs.
Why doesnt one of our intelligent local persons, maybe the one who writes proposals for a living, come up with a proposal so that we can get a decent radio station. Im thinking something along the lines of, the broadcasting type degree people could be the ones who run it(as an internship/work study), the advertising people could be the ones who generate the income for it and so on. I wonder too, aren't there college stations out there that play other people's music, like the stuff you would pay royalties for, not garage band stuff? How do they do it/how can they afford it.
And I think we should make the 'playlist', listener voted. With parameters. Such as, only music made between say 1968 to 1990(or 87,88,89 whatever) in a rock genre(heavy,classic, metal...) can be played. Tough corns if the young people running the station don't like it. So in theory, we could have a 'program director', but all the kids/people running the station would be doing it for real world experience and not be paid, so that would save a ton of money there, I think basically you would just need to generate money for the royalties, and then I guess the components of the actual facility itself(building,electric,antenna etc.)

Has something like this been attempted before? What really is the reason it seems we cant keep a local station for more than about a year before it changes format/ownership? We could even start a community action council type thingie for "Save Rock Radio" composed of all volunteers to determine what we need to do and people to 'appoint' such as researchers, cooridinator, proposal writers, technical skillsets etc.
Any thoughts or am I a delusional blurry eyed insomniac right now?:drummer:

This is why XM radio exists. If you want free, then live with crappy local stations.

It is...depending on where you can pick it up. I've noticed in my driving around Great Mills/Lexington Park that 105.9 has a very weak signal, even to the point where it gets drowned out by some country music station.

Get a CD player in your car that will play MP3 format music. You can load a couple of hundred songs on 1 CD.

There's this newfangled crazy invention called an MP3 player.....they come in all shapes and sizes...you can store mass amounts of music on them and play what you want to!

If you don't want to do that, and want a DJ to give you news updates etc...there is another contraption called XM/Sirius....it's inexpensive and can be used anywheres!

After moving here I broke down and bought Sirus. I have to say I don't even turn the local radio stations on and haven't in well over a year. I couldn't even tell you what genre of stations are out there today.

We have a lifetime subscription for Sirius/XM, we bought it about 7 or 8 years ago. I love that you can listen to the music you want to hear, and you can listen to NFL games as well. It's hard to listen to your local team when your out of town! Now since Sirius and XM have merged, you can get just about anything you want.

It's wonderful, well worth the money.

Well, most of the civilized world has radio stations which don't suck, and which are free of charge. XM/Serious notwithstanding, it would be very nice if we had that luxury here as well.

This God-forsaken crotch of a place doesn't have much, but we at least used to have a radio station that was worth a ####.

Yep, change it from one crappy station to another. WGRQ 95.9 in Fredericksburg plays pretty good music and gives out emergency info for St. Mary's County.

50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, hell, for some the 90s are the oldies - hey do you remember the Backstreet Boys?

Which goes hand in hand with what do people consider "rock".

Satellite radio is the answer, yes it costs money but you can pick exactly the type of music you consider "old" and "rock"
