Ok, sorry....:ohwell: didn't mean to raise the fur... sounds like you were doing all the right things, not sure how you got hit. It would be interesting, if you get the same kind of hit again, to let someone see what it was and how it got there, before you wiped it out.

I'm sorry I'm grumpy :blushing: I have just been dealing with this for the past week and I am soooooooooooooooooooo tired of it all! I especially hate the way the Tech's start talking to me like I'm 5 and I don't know what the hell I'm doing. The eventually figure out that I am no novice at this. It takes a really big problem for me to admit defeat. :frown: I am usually the one that gets called when someone's computer is messed up. I'm not used to having to cry for help. :bawl:

Please forgive my grumpiness! :huggy: :flowers:

:lmao: not a problem.... I just happen to be "one of those techs" and deal with this daily. It's just an instinctive reaction sometimes!! I apologize on behalf of all of us techs! :flowers:

:roflmao: I am assuming that was a very poetic type-O!

Yes I am using Internet explorer. I am not particularly fond of Firefox.

If you do decide to make the switch, we may be able to help you. Let us know what you don't like about it and we can tell you how to do it in FireFox. There are a ton of add-ons that make it so much more secure and more productive then IE. Years ago when it was new I did not like it either, but then when 1.4 or 1.5 came out I made the switch for good.

You could also try Apple - Safari 3 (still in Beta) and Opera Web Browser.

As for whatever hit your drive, like you said it was most likely on your external HD. You could back that up to DVD first before wiping it next time, but have a friend with a MAC or Linux do it for you. They could also scan it on their machine and see what was on it.

How come I never...

... have issues with viruses with Internet Explorer?

All the problems with Vista, it's meaningless over-the-top user control settings and overdone graphics and all the rest the POS has to offer, I'm getting a Mac. And, if my desktop goes, I won't replace it.

Takes 30 seconds to power up and login to a Mac, whereas I have to sit there and wait and wait and wait with Windows.

30 Seconds? You need to run this then MacJanitor

This is caused because it is built on Unix and Unix is meant to be left on all the time. Most people turn off their MAC at night so it doesn't get to do its maintenance.

I ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY HATE VIRUSES!!! :tantrum

I just reformatted my computer not once, not twice but THREE friggen times in the past friggen MONTH!!!! :tantrum

I thought Windows Vista was supposed to be SAFER!?!?!?! HA!!! I say to that!!!! There is NOTHING safe about this POS operating system!!!!

Rant over, that is all, carry on!

It may be, but I absolutely refuse to spend anymore money on virus protection that doesn't work. I JUST bought Norton 360 about 2 weeks ago and got slammed anyway. I am sick to death of dumping good money down the drain! In less then a year I have had McAfee, Trend Micro, Windows One Live Care and now Norton 360. NONE of it works! I'm totally FED UP!

Thanks for the suggestion though! :huggy:

How are you getting so many viruses.

I have NO (Zilch, zippo, none, notta) virus protection and my computer hasn't recieved one virus since I built this thing in February. :diva:

Vista sucks. You just threw away your money buying something with Vista.

Because Macs are immune to viruses.

My custom build actually has a Macintosh manufactured motherboard with an AMD processor. The speed is there, despite it being a Athlon XP 2000+. Faster than any dual core computer at work.

It's possible you did not have a virus, but rather a spyware/adware that didn't get detected. They can cause as much grief as a virus. There are a few good free products there too, AdAware SE, SpyBot...

Hope you have better luck this time around!

sorry GWguy - Adware and spybot rate way down the food chain in terms how much is caught and removed ............ (not my review just my .02 )

I know Microsoft Anti-Spyware used to be good before they relaunched it as Windows Defender.

I don't have a problem with spyware, and my computer is still lightning fast.

No prob, that's what a forum is all about, an exchange of ideas and experiences. I've had decent luck with them, but then again, my system is clean to start with. Thanx for posting the reviews!

Because Macs are immune to viruses.

Macs new OS is a UNIX core - more and more cert advisories, IAVA's and IAVB's are coming out on them... Go to cert.org - search on MAC and sort by date...

Cert MAC Search

The mass of the users on the internet use PC's with 2000/XP/Vista and that is what the hackers usually target, but as more and more Mac's are deployed they will get their fair share of the virus and vulnerabilities spotlighted!

With OS X being UNIX based it is MUCH EASIER for the virus to be targeted towards the MAC OS... previous to the UNIX core Mac's were pretty well impervious to attacks.

With this said - I have been running the same XP OS for 3 years - no problems... I am not saying PC's are any better, but this is how long mine has been going virus free! (I do work with both Macs and Windoze machines)...

it is harder to compromise a Mac / Unix Computer, like you can a PC by just surfing the wrong web site computer turned into a spam spewing zombie ...........

Unix uses a different architecture for user control, software does not get installed without user acknowledgment ie permission ........ as readily as Windows PC's
