If you are a fan of the outdoors, and want to voluenteer for a good cause, check into the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

They offer workshops most of the year round. Always looking for help with Bay projects. Planting trees and bay grasses, growing oysters, etc.

The spouse and I had it out this weekend over our mutual inability to exercise our need for escapism.
This becomes much easier when you know what types of activities you enjoy. I was an avid scuba diver before I moved here. Had to find someting else to do that was 1) close by, 2) semi inexpensive, and 3) an activity that I could get lost in. By that I mean something that once I get going, I'll lose track of time and forget to eat.
So the question becomes what do you like to do?

It sounds like they don't know what they like to do together, so trying new things would probably be very helpful to both of them.

BadGirl

I am so very blessed
Wintertime is a hard time to get involved in activities around here. But fortunately, with the onset of Spring, more things will be going on that should catch your interest. A few people have suggested some great things already, but here's a few more to add to the pile:

* the Summer Concert Series at St. Mary's College - great music on seven consecutive Friday's during the summer - usually begins the 2nd week of June - on the waterfront with some really great talent

* Wine Tastings and Beer Tastings at a few places within the area. Sotterly, St. Mary's City, etc. pay attention to postings within the local newspaper for specific locations, dates, and times.

* sign up to be a "Friends of" an organization. I've met some great folks by making a donation to Historic St. Mary's City and the Calvert Marine Museum. Becoming a Member to one of these groups allows you to participate in cool activities that might interest you.

* the Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance group holds periodic coffeehouses that showcase really talented musicians and dancers. Contact www.smtmd.org for more info.

if I can think of anything else, I'll revise this post.

Bicycling.

Is there a biking club somewhere in the St. Mary's area?

Get a motorcycle and go riding with the Souther Cruisers Riding Club

SCARY!!! :twitch:
I'm too young to die...

Volunteer - at the senior center, va home, school/libraries, local fire dept/ems or big brothers/big sisters.

Take a class - the college is real close and the community offers various classes (check the local paper) - take cooking, or a language or painting or even dancing.

Join a "club" - again check the paper - but there is the VFW, Lions Club, Optimist Club, Rotary, not to mention specifically geared clubs such as the corvette or classic cars or what have you.

As to the Volunteer suggestion---this probably reveals me for the horrible person that I am, but this sort of thing just depresses me. I used to volunteer with the Humane Society and though I know I did some good there, it was emotionally very taxing on me. I don't really consider it a "hobby" if have nightmares about it.

Classes are a wonderful idea---and something I seriously hadn't considered. Is CSM the only place to hit up the less academic ones (I'll be damned if I'm going to put myself through another economics course...)?

Clubs are actually what I had in mind when I initiated this thread (though, looking back at my original post, I can see how most folks would have missed that...). I've been eyeballing the Enterprise, and Pennysaver whenever they come and trying to find something appealing, but just about everything seems either too demanding, requires a pre-requisite (ie, VFW and military groups), or---and excuse the terminology--just seems lame.

I was really hoping that someone would know of some off-the-wall organization that just doesn't advertise well!

Poker/card club, bowling, swinging, body painting, volunteer at a soup kitchen/disaster relief, chess, batting cages, golf, tennis, softball league, dart league, pool league, tupperware, sex toy workshops, Amway, volunteer with SMC in rebuilding computers (not sure the name of the place).

Christmas in April is always fun. Highway cleanup club.

Or you could always buy a bottle of Yagermeister and Twister.........guaranteed to stay busy for hours...........

Oh, the mental images.... :killingme

When not at RF, we research characters, work on accents and put together costumes. We always take something to give the kiddies. The first year it was gold coins (chocolates), the second year it was gold coins and pearl necklaces, this year we've put together little organza bags with a pearl necklace, gold coin and a jewel. Cute little things.

Elaine, this sounds REALLY interesting. We're both very much into being complete and utter dorks, so we vehemently look forward to the Maryland and Pennsylvania Renn. Faires / Celtic Flings.

Are you involved with the local SCA at all? A co-worker mentioned that to me this afternoon, and it sounds very similar.

It's very interesting, and tons of fun (read, dorks). I don't think I've met anyone that I don't like, at least a little bit. We're not involved with SCA, don't even know if there is a local SCA. We've only been involved for a few years and pretty much do our own thing.

Think I've still got 4 swing dance lessons left at the Chancellors run community center you can use. I dropped out when I found out my partner was dancing with somebody else.

Ah, I was under the impression you and your spouse were attending the RFs with a group of some sort.

Are you members of the CSSM, then?

This is the most promising recommendation yet---I think I'd really like to try and become involved. Thank you very much!

Nope, not with any organized groups. We haven't really considered CSSM because there is only one local event, that I'm aware of. We enjoy going to that, but often miss it.

We would love to become more involved, and have been invited, but auditions and rehearsals are too far away. At VARF my husband often improvises and just kind of joins in when he can.
