The federal bastages aren't getting my money until 4/13, however. :duh:

Oh, and by the way, the lovely Commonwealth of Virginia owes me $6. I would like it immediately, thank you.

The new guy we got to do out taxes this year put the wrong ss # down on the forms for the DH. :ohwell: So now I have to call the IRS in 6 weeks if I don't get a letter stating "Please fix :blahblah:"

CG, sorry to hear about your tax trauma. Our answer to that (about 13 years ago) was so successful that we haven't had to sweat taxes since then at all. Part 1 of the solution was to have our employers withold at a higher rate; we discovered they weren't witholding anywhere near as much as they were supposed to for (in our case, Maryland). Pert 2 of the solution was to go to H&R Block and have a pro do it. Nine times out of ten, the lady (same one every year) asks us if we want such and such an option, or such and such a deduction, and she tells us about new laws that go in our favor for tax purposes. We've gotten a refund every year from both the state and the feds, and it's rarely less than 4 digits to the left of the decimal point (well, 3 for the state and 4 for the fed). Even this year, when I was out of work for 6 months and the money I was making, I didn't deduct any for taxes - we still have a 4-digit refund. Deposited the state refund yesterday.

In a perfect world, you shouldn't owe or get a refund. Why should the Federal Government keep your money (in your case, thousands) w/out paying you interest on it?

I look at it as insurance - taxes are unpredictable to the average lunkhead like me; this way I know I won't have to take out a loan to pay my taxes.

If you're getting over a K$ on your refund, you're haveing WAY to much witheld. It's not a savings account, it's you giving the govt. an intrest free loan. I think they get enough of my money without me having to loan them more.
