If your child were likely to be born gay

would you want to know?

I just finished reading an article on DNA determining sexual orientation. In the article they posted this question on message boards. I figured we could answer it too.

That question is no different than them asking if you knew your child would be born mental or physically challenged would you want to know. The answer is simple for me. Things happen for a reason. I would love my child no different. :huggy:

I feel the same way :yay: The article dicussed the not too distant choice a mom may have to make to try and alter sexual orentaion of the child. It might be as simple as wearing a patch on your belly

If you are asking if I would correct it if I knew about it and could... I'd say yes, same as I would any other defect that was correctable...

Ok....I have to ask......

You think that being gay is a "defect" or am I reading into this a little more than I should?

I would not correct sexual orientation. I don't see that as a birth defect. Other birth defects - trisomies, cardiac prolapses, spina bifida, and so on, would have my full backing and would give informed consent, based on the potential harm to the fetus.

Yes, In the sense that the brain development took a turn from the norm. I know and accept that being born with homosexual tendencies happens naturally, but it's a fluke of nature all the same. If it is caused by the mother's body not producing the right amount of horomones at the right time I see nothing wrong with correcting it if possible, just as a mother can chose to correct other defects by taking certain vitamins or other body chemistry altering venues.

I know families where being gay is the norm

It would make perfect sense that the chemical imbalance is hereditary. I'm not arguing with that at all. In fact, I'm not arguing with anything at all. I fully believe homosexuality is part of nature in all species. I never was on the "it's a choice so you life with your choice" bandwagon. I have nothing against homosexuals and am accepting of them just as I am anyone that is different. You asked if I would correct it if I could and I said I would. Did you really not want people to answer...:eyebrow:

Why not? If it is caused by chemical imbalance of the mother during development than it is a defect.

The same technology could be used to determine intelligence and personality traits. It seems like will soon be able to mold babies into whatever we want.
