Don't wait to get an application- go to businesses with a "resume"- even if you have NO work experience- it shows initiative and a desire to learn. Your accomplishments to date - good grades, sports, band; are worth mentioning.

I'm glad to see you threw out a higher number than I was expecting to hear. You really do however need to get the quote before the car.

ITALIAN - I am not too sure if you are sincere in this job search. Sounds like you are interested in other people doing the searching for you. I just checked the main page on somd.com and found 3 links to jobs - employment and classifieds on the left and jobs on the right. Before to running to the forums, a quick search through the main page might have answered a few of your questions. I am also surprised your parents never suggested the classifieds to help you in your search. Besides somd.com, have you checked monster.com or hotjobs.com or even yahoo.com? Have you visited local establishments in your neighborhood where they may already know you?
Someone mentioned initiative and first impressions. Having managed convenience stores for years, I can tell you that the previous poster hit the nail on the head. Take the initiative to learn something about the job you are applying for. What do you expect the job to entail? Just ring the register and be accountable for the cash or will you be forced to empty the trash, wipe down counters, keep your area clean, sweep the parking lot, etc? Is your hair neatly combed and cut? What about your fingernails? Do you present a clean image or do you wear your pants down to your knee caps so the world can see your boxers (trust me, employers and customers do not want to see boxers!)
Does Maryland have any rules or laws about the hours minors can work? Some states have laws that state minors can not work past 9 or 10 pm during the week so as to not interfere with their schooling.
I truly wish you luck in your search.

Just some quick info man from someone just a little bit older than yourself.
My first job was at Boomerang's, I worked there as a dishwasher at age 14... I put in a million applications, followed up with every one and only got hired for one. You seriously have to apply for every job you can think of. Also, call and follow-up and ask them where they are at in the hiring process. Make sure they know you are really interested in the job. There are tons of teenagers out there, you really have to make an impact for them to be interested in you. Unskilled teenagers are expendable, make sure you know that...
I can relate to your problems, I bought my own car at 16, a 1995 Toyota Tercel for $1000. I loved that car to death because I paid for it...
For reference I did the steer clear program and had good grades, my insurance was about $170/month... Now at 21 with a clean record my insurance is about $135/month.
I worked at various restaurants until I graduated high school and was lucky enough to land an internship at a defense contractor. I am now a software developer there and made enough to move out on my own at 18...
Just apply everywhere, work hard and you will be able to get the things you want...

Dude did you try Wentworths Nursery or all the others in your area. This small time job you mentioned will be your first employment reference on your resume. So if I was you I would take any job that you may land a little more serious.

Wentworths is hiring... you should check them out asap.
and the Mechanicsville Burchmart (Burchoil) has a sign out front saying Now Hiring.. granted its been out there since December but I think they continuously hire people. I work for the company (been working since January) and they hire someone for the Charlotte Hall Shell at least once a week lol. It's not a very demanding job and pretty laid back atmosphere. Try the burchoil website to fill out an application for the local burchmarts and go to the store to hand one in. :] ((better impression that way))
Ohh and dont forget McKays and Food Lion.. they seem to ALWAYS be hiring!!

Good info! I've been trying to stress to him to research the cost of particular cars before the purchase, and to just be aware of the high cost of insurance in general, especially for young males.

You're probably going to hate this advice as well, but don't be to proud to shop in the local thrift stores for clothing if necessary. At different times you can find some amazing deals on shirts, jeans, jackets etc. It's not unheard of to pay .25 cents for a T-shirt that might cost you $20-$30 dollars in a retail store. A trip through the washing machine and nobody is none the wiser where you got it from.
