"...you want to get someone you love a puppy for Christmas. That might sound like a great idea, but it's not, and here's why: think about how hectic you are during Christmas. Are you sure that's the best time to introduce a puppy that will need a lot of attention, and most likely will not yet be housebroken? Incidentally, this is why many shelters will not adopt out pets right before Christmas. If you absolutely must give a dog as a Christmas gift, try this instead. After you have made the arrangements to adopt the puppy, buy the crate, the dishes, the collar, and anything else your puppy will need and wrap it up and put it under the Christmas tree. When your kid(s) open it up and wonder where the puppy is, explain to them that right now is not the best time for the puppy to come into the house, but once things settle down a bit they can go with you to pick the puppy up. What a great lesson in responsibility for your kids!"

Just a snippet from an online article. Consider it.

Search the rescue groups, or tell the kids you will get them one right after X-mass and then you can have your pick of many puppies in the shelter that were gotten as gifts

Don't forget to order your pet bunnies in advance for easter presents

Pull the stick out of your butt and think back to what you previously asked. You asked for help. We have offered it to you.

Personally, I think that CRoyal's response was very informative. Did you know that many things around the house during the holiday season are TOXIC to dogs? For example:poinsetta, mistletoe, and holly. If the pet drinks the water from the base of the tree, they will get sick. Electrical cords are prime chew toys for puppies. Needless to say, electric shock can ensue. Tinsel from the tree can block the intestines. If you are already on a tight budget, how would you be able to afford expensive surgery right after buying the puppy? While on that note-how will you afford shots, spay, and regular monthly maintenance if the budget is already so tight that you are looking for a deal? BTW: the smaller a dog stays, the more expensive they are to purchase so if you do find one for cheap, be prepared for it to not be a healthy specimen from the get go.

Also, Vince wasn't lecturing you about guns. That is his electronic signature. It shows up on every post he makes. Did you also notice that before his signature, there was a breed that he suggested?

Cynthia, if you're looking for a cheap purebred puppy, remember you'll get what you pay for. Conversely, if you pay a ton of money you still could get a crappy puppy. You really need to do your homework and not let money dictate your choice IF you want a purebred.

I'd recommend a rescue or a shelter but most won't place a dog as a Christmas gift.

:yeahthat:

I got my two pure bred shih tzu's from the ASPCA. The adoption fee was $150 each. That was 9 years ago.

You are a freaking idiot. Vince gave you advice on a DOG. His signature happens to mention firearms. That has NOTHING to do with the advice he gave you. In case you are as limited in your reading ability as you are stupid, I will remind you that Vince was nice enough to recommend you get a Rat Terrier for a small dog.

In all reality I wouldn't suggest a Rat Terrier other than them being smaller, they take a lot of responsibility and patience which I doubt this person has.

And you might as well forget the rescue groups as we won't adopt Christmas puppies.....

My daughter has been begging for "her own dog" for a while now. Nooooooooooo way is she getting one. First of all i already have 3 dogs, all by my choice that i love dearly. But eveyone knows what usually happens to a dog that is given to a child as a gift. After the newness wears off and the kids get mad that their toys keep getting chewed up the pup is usally shipped off to a shelter cause mom does not have time to take care of it.

Any small dog will more than likely be a house dog and need patience and training especially in the way of house breaking. This person may have the patience, I don't know, but the rat terrier is a great dog. Had two for a lot of years. The last one lived to 20 years.

huntr, I was wondering what the hell she was talking about on the gun thing. She read my sig line.

They should be begging for better genetics instead. :yay:

I don't agree with pets for Christmas, not that you want to hear that.

I may know of a pom available, but you need to tell me and other potential sellers, what you are looking for in a dog.

Small isn't the only factor in a dog. You only listed 3 small breeds Yorkie, Chi, and Pom. All are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT in PERSONALITY.

 For the most part Yorkies are terriers and as such have many terrier traits in a small package. One of my poms was grabbed by a yorkie in the group ring at a dog show.
 Chi's are generally more reserved and tend to like more of a low key environment.
 Poms are extroverts and like to be involved with it all. They don't know they are small and can be easily hurt because of this lack of fear.

A good breeder or rescue will only place a dog with the correct family for that dog. I wouldn't put a shy dog with a family with 3 active young kids. Same as I wouldn't put a excited in our face dog with a family that wanted a lap dog.

You said small, but that is relative what size are you really looking for? 5, 10, 15 lbs?
You said you have a budget, what kind of budget? $5, $50, $500?
You said puppy? What is the max age you are willing to except? 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, months?

Also telling us about you and your family, your lifestyle etc is important, we want people to be happy with a dog, and not have it mis-treated because it wasn't a good fit.

I do rescue and this year I had a 40+ man from a family of 4 turn over (2) 3 month old pom puppies to me, because his family couldn't handle all the work that they are. He didn't think it thru. His kids said dad we want the puppies and he got them. Only in 4 weeks to turn them over to rescue because they were a bad fit for them. This family had, been dog owners in the past, but poms weren't a good fit. It was hard on the whole family. I felt for them and the dogs. I am not saying you are the same, but this is why we ask so many questions.

Rescues charge 200-300 for adoption fees, breeders are generally higher or at the high end of rescue prices. Also you need to be ready to pay for additional costs on puppies like shots, neuter or spay, and general yearly health costs. I am sure you have thought of all of this, but your msg doesn't come across to that effect.

I wish you luck on your task to find a furry family member that is perfect for you all for life, not just Christmas.
