More Trump Effect. Yesterday, Reuters ran a story headlined, “Wall St closes higher; small-caps hit record high after Trump nominates Bessent.” As the market’s reaction to his nomination as Treasury Secretary showed, Scott Bessent is highly qualified. He’s smart, he is a heterodox thinker, and became a quiet Trump supporter since before it was safe to do so. The biggest problem is that Scott managed one of George Soros’s many investment companies between 2011-2015. Scott worked for Soros even longer than that, and enjoyed a warm personal relationship with the far-left billionaire.

image 7.png

As ever, the situation is not as simple as it looks. Claims circulated on social media that Elon Musk strongly opposed Bessent’s nomination. If so, Elon was more diplomatic in his only public comment:

image 8.png

The responses to Elon’s tweet were fascinating. Elon engaged with a lot of high-profile folks who weighed in, both pro and con. If you are interested in this pick, you might enjoy reading through all those comments. There was a surprising amount of support for Bessent from the right. For example:

image 9.png

Perhaps most helpful was Mollie Hemingway’s somewhat troubling deep-dive on Bessent published early this month, titled “The George Soros Partner Who Disrupted Right-Wing Publishing.” Ultimately, Mollie concluded that Bessent’s red-pill experience could be bona fide:

Smith’s suit claimed that Bessent is a “progressive,” but there is nothing in his history, besides the Soros association, to suggest he is now a secret holder of left-wing beliefs. Instead it is possible, though by no means certain, that the quantitative easing policy championed by then-President Barack Obama pushed Bessent to the right. In 2017, Bessent shared his fear with author David Smick that cheap money and low interest rates had fed a disastrous glut of corporate debt. “The next downturn will be worse because corporate balance sheets are now a lot more fragile,” said Bessent. In a rare op-ed last year, Bessent blamed Biden’s policies for the severity and persistence of inflation in the U.S.

Bessent is an unusual case of someone who invests and donates like a conservative but maintains his status within more liberal spaces. He chairs the investment committee at Rockefeller University, the medical research institute in Manhattan, and sits on the Yale University Council.

Whatever his real views, and whatever the reasons behind them, Bessent has won the public loyalty of one major Trump world figure. “Scott’s a visionary who keeps his hands off the day to day,” Peter Navarro wrote by email, later adding: “If you are working up a hit piece on him, I’m not your guy.” (A few weeks later, Navarro was convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to testify before the January 6th Select Committee). Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon has told at least one person he is in business with Bessent.

Citing a Wall Street Journal article, conservative journalist and author Miranda Devine (700K followers), called Bessent a “quiet disrupter” who quit working for Soros in 2015 when he could no longer avoid the politics, and said the two men have not spoken for years.

Over on far-left BlueSky, there’s not much you could call support for Bessent, they don’t seem to know quite what to make of him. Though there is much mirth and hilarity over the Scott—Soros connection and how conservatives are likely to react. Financial industry sources generally described Scott as a keen debt hawk, courageously pro-tariff and, relative to the other potential candidates, holding a more moderate, even-keeled economic philosophy.

I get the concerns; we’ve all heard this song before. And nobody distrusts George Soros more than me. I’m prepared to believe Soros is literally Satan wearing an Eastern European meat suit. But I think it would be a mistake, and would play right into our enemies’ hands, to unleash the hecklers’ veto against any of Trump’s nominees, including Bessent. Not yet. Give the man time to work. GTMTTW. (Now, that’s just me; you do you. Also, it seems fair and just that nominees must live with things they’ve said and done.)

Two Far-Left Veterans Behind Claim Pete Hegseth’s Tattoos Are Linked to White Supremacy

Reuters reported last week that one of those soldiers who reported him was now-retired Master Sergeant DeRicko Gaither, who was then the unit’s head of physical security. Gaither had sent the then-D.C. National Guard Commander Maj. Gen. William Walker an email with a photo of Hegseth’s tattoos.

Gaither’s email, published by the Associated Press, was a word salad accusing Hegseth of being a white supremacist. It said:

According to Jerry Dunleavy, a former investigator for the House Republicans’ investigation into the Biden administration’s bungled Afghanistan withdrawal, parts of Gaither’s email were plagiarized from a 2018 article by an “extreme leftwing professor” who identifies herself as a “intersectional feminist”:

Gaither, who is black, has a podcast where he has only featured black guests and used the hashtag #BlackAuthor when promoting his wife’s children’s book on Instagram. He also recently liked a post on LinkedIn congratulating the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office’s “FIRST all female armed detention officer graduating class,” whose members also happen to all be black.

Despite his seeming discrimination against non-black people, his email claiming Hegseth’s tattoos were associated with white supremacy was enough to convince the D.C. National Guard commander at that time, who is also black, to revoke Hegseth’s orders for the inauguration.

Now, Gaither’s email is being used to again suggest Hegseth is a white supremacist.

But Gaither was not the originator of the smear. It was another pro-DEI veteran who is heavily involved in Democrat activism.

A Navy veteran named Travis Akers, who was still serving at the time, first tweeted out the photo of Hegseth’s tattoos, which was forwarded to Gaither, according to the Washington Post.

Akers deleted his tweet but not before it was captured:

Travis-Akers-Pete-Hegseth-tweet.jpg

Akers has been openly involved in Democrat politics since his retirement from the military in June 2023. He co-founded a pro-gun reform group called Left of Bang along with other far-left veterans that included Fred Wellman, the former executive director of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project.

Akers is also on the board of directors of DemCast, which states its mission is “to cultivate, amplify & maximize the impact of grassroots digital media, bolstering blue electoral and policy victories at all levels of government, across America.”

Akers listed on his LinkedIn account a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate from the University of South Florida, issued in April 2024.

In 2024, he ran unsuccessfully for a school board in Duval County Public Schools to represent District 7 in northern Florida, but he withdrew before his first public debate. During his campaign, he espoused support for “equity” and “inclusivity”– two major tenets of DEI.

Akers also serves as an adviser for the Jacksonville Urban League, whose mission is to “enable African Americans as well as other underserved communities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.”

Also in 2024, he campaigned for Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris, participating in an event with other far-left veterans, including Wellman, disgraced Navy veteran Malcolm Nance, Army Gen. (Ret.) Tammy Smith, former Army veteran Naveed Shah, and Army military spouse Rebekah Sanderlin. Sanderlin has attacked conservative troops and veterans despite being affiliated with the non-partisan United Service Organization (USO), which is supposed to serve troops regardless of political beliefs.

While Akers has called for “transcend[ing] the bitterness,” he has frequently launched personal attacks against strangers on social media.

He then frequently deletes those personal attacks to erase the trail and has changed his social media handle on X several times.

He also has a history of threatening to doxx social media users.

On July 18, 2024, he taunted a user: “Uh oh. Looks like little Timmy clicked on a linked [sic] that captures an IP address and geolocated the device. It’s going to be an interesting Monday morning for little Timmy.” He deleted that tweet afterwards.

On May 6, 2024, he posted on X to another user, “You should use a VPN, your IP address shows your name.”

On June 1, 2024, he wrote about another user, “I’m holding on to the identity of Sandal for a rainy day. I can say this, it’s not the person we initially expected, but still someone known to the politically inclined of Jacksonville.”

On XXX, he posted, “Geolocating this image made unmasking this account easier than most. Thanks, ‘Catherine.’

He then posted, on 6/27/24, “I didn’t doxx her. I let her know I know who she is. So if she wants to continue her behavior, that’s fine, but she now knows it’s not anonymous. Stand behind what you say when the mask is removed.”

Akers has written as recently as 2020 about his battle with alcoholism, lying to his wife about it, and being part of an anonymous group to deal with it.

Despite Akers’ checkered past and open activism for Democrats, his claims that Hegseth’s tattoos are linked to white supremacy have resurfaced as Hegseth prepares for his confirmation as Trump administration defense secretary.

What do you mean by “rebuilt”?

Do you think there are thousands of experienced folks just waiting in the wings? Or are you suggesting some minor readjustments to an organizational structure?

Trust me, none of these places have a shadow version ready to take over, their skill sets are incredibly specialized, “rebuilding” them is destroying them.

But maybe you want them destroyed, and maybe I don’t want someone who is 70 weighing in on the next 20 years.

...so what "incredibly specialized skill sets" did Peter Strzok - Lisa Page - Lois Lerner add to the government staff, other than to lie and use their position to try to unlawfully punish people in the opposite political party?

Thing about tariffs and Trump - they know he isn’t bluffing.

And the left, again either intentionally or through idiocy, seem to miss how Trump uses them. He's like the gunslinger thats walked into the bar. First thing he does is sweep back the duster to show his gun, which tells them all he means business and wont take any crap.

And again, its not this is all new stuff never done before. We've seen this show. Just like any other deal. you start high, then bargain. He's not a megalomaniac (not an evil one anyway) bent on destroying stuff. He sees himself as the CEO of American, and he will do deals with anyone to get the job done. Unlike the diplomatic-industrial complex, he expects everyone to stick to the deal.

Just another skill set that is incredibly specialized

“The Census Bureau’s review of the 2020 Census revealed substantial miscounts and discrepancies tending to benefit Democrat-run states,” House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., said in a statement to The Daily Signal. “Congress has a responsibility to conduct oversight of these massive errors to ensure they are not repeated in the 2030 census.”

The Biden administration’s Census Bureau revealed in May 2022 that it undercounted the Republican-leaning states of Arkansas by 5%, Florida by 3.4%, Mississippi by 4.11%, Tennessee by 4.78%, and Texas by 1.92%. The Census Bureau undercounted one Democratic-leaning state, Illinois, by 1.97%.

The Census Bureau overcounted Biden’s home state of Delaware by 5.45% as well as other Democratic-leaning states: Hawaii by 6.79%, Massachusetts by 2.24%, Minnesota by 3.84%, New York by 3.44%, and Rhode Island by 5%.

Such errors could aid Democrats politically by giving blue states a larger share of Electoral College votes as well as more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He has made it clear plenty of times - the tariffs aren't mean-spirited punishment, which is how the left portrays them, because not a damn one of them gets how the game is played - which is why they make terrible deals. Even in Congress.

Trump deals like he is haggling a vendor - START with a bad offer, work to the center - the left, hell, all of Washington, is so desperate to accomplish a deal, they're willing to bargain away their firstborn, just to be able to walk away and say, they made a deal.

We just saw the original Ghostbusters as a family, and there's the scence where they're looking to buy the old firehouse. Egon is haggling - telling the realtor what a dump it is and how it ought to be condemned. He's angling for a better DEAL. Ray blows the whole thing by sliding down the firepole and saying how much he loves the place.

That's the left in international deals, but it's also Washington in general. YOU NEED TO CONVINCE your opposite you're totally willing to walk away from a deal - and you might DO that, to show them you mean business.

Trump has even SAID this - and has said that a good deal isn't where someone walks away feeling cheated.

JUST THE THREAT OF TARIFFS BEFORE HE'S EVEN TAKEN THE OATH - and he's got Canada and Mexico talking - even capitulating - because they know he's not joking.

China won't knuckle under as easily -

Wow. I'm not involved in decennial, but I had not heard that - and even 2% is VERY BAD, in either direction.

I don't think it will affect apportionment, though. You have to be off by about 750,000 to affect it, either way (the average size of a Congressional district).

...so true. If I was off by 2% on my income tax filing do you think I could use the excuse "well the Census Bureau’s is off by 2-3-4-5% so I should be incorrect by that amount too, what's the big deal?"

What I think Sam is saying is that the appointments are "digital" meaning there is no in between so everything between what is required for the next rung up the ladder the steps is inconsequential where every bit you are off on your taxes has an effect, but honestly I'm sure ive made mistakes on my taxes and it went unnoticed.
What I don't get is over counting, undercounting I can understand because I don't think I was ever counted simply because I never mailed my form back in and nobody came to my house.

...man, you really like living on the edge, don't you? lol...

I can see the Census police now, arriving at your door at 3am with loud knocking.

"PeoplesElbow!!!! Open up and come out with your hands raise and bring the holy Census form with you! No second chances! If you don't, we will send some of the new 87,000 IRS agents to audit your taxes! You can't denied the Federal Government because if you do, there will be consequents!

Come out now this is your last chance!"

Years back I was in the Grand Bazzar. Was haggling with a merchant for a leather coat. We went back and forth. "I cannot sell this fine garment for that price Sir, my children, then need to eat", and I mentioned that so too, did my children. Back and forth, and finally I walked out, no deal. After a lap around, we came by his shop again. He called me over and made that final cut the split out last difference.

Not sure why, but even buying a car I've rarely had to haggle, went into things knowing a good price and often get that price on the first go around. It might be my size and intense stare, I often get people apologizing to me for no reason and people offering to let me go ahead them in line at Lowe's and Walmart.
