ISO boxer puppy or young dog

My husband has been begging me for a boxer for years and I am thinking of giving in. I love boxers but their lack of longevity scares me. I grew up with and still have cocker spaniels, ours tend to live 14-16+ years. We are looking for very healthy bloodlines, need not be show lines. Would prefer AKC registered but we are also checking shelters for purebreds or mixes so that is an option. I will not buy a mix from a "breeder" though. Male or female is ok. He would Love love love a brindle! I could probably talk him into a well marked fawn (I am partial to fawn). Great temperment is a absolute must. We have 2 cocker spaniels and my parents have cockers and pomeranians (we will be around them a lot). Must be great with kids as well, I run a riding stable and there are kids here almost all the time.
Are there any local breeders?
Also any health issues to be on the look out for?

Was pretty sure there was a poster who bred boxers on here..maybe not.
Have been looking at rescues and while we have found no purebred or purebred looking boxers there aare some lovely larger dogs out there.I think we may plan a trip to the Calvert humane society. Still interested in a purebred boxer though.

Just a thought, the vet at Prince Frederick Animal Hospital, Dr. Craig, her parents or mother is a boxer breeder. Who better to ask? Plus she's a wonderful vet :buddies:

There really are a lot of health issues with boxers. Catt is a wealth of knowledge. Ive had them
For years and have dealt with Cancer( very common in the breed) seizures, skin allergies ( another big one) , UTI issues and many issues that are common among deep deep chest cavity canines. I would still never have another breed !!!

If I could convince my son, I'd sell you his pure breed brindle intact boxer boy. my dog hates him, and he is such a sweet dog!

I know they have lots of health issues but I still love the breed. Esp the cancer scares me. Hubby was totally set on a purebred boxer so it surprised me when he mentioned looking at rescues. Told him he is not likely to find a purebred but he doesnt seem to mind. He has gone from Must have a purebred AKC reg. brindle boxer male, to just about any larger breed dog w/short hair and an awesome personality. Of course I think this is in part to looking online and finding how much a purebred boxer (or dog of almost any breed that is good quality) can cost!!

....

what does a set of papers do for a dog... UNLESS you plan to better the breed and show him and breed him...then you are looking at about 1500-2500 for a VERY WELL BREED DOG.

there are ALWAYS pure breed dogs at the shelter and in the rescues.. they end up there because of people getting a breed that they cant handle, they move, or they just dont want anymore.

Why should they have to die because someone feels the need to have papers on a dog? 100 bucks at the shelter gets you a dog that has been FULLY vetted. The only extra you will have is getting the heartworm meds and flea and tick meds.

oohh and food.

there are certain situations where buying a dog is the right thing to do..

even a well breed dog with papers could have the same amount of health issues as a pound dog. genetics are a crazy thing.

We do not plan to breed and would possibly show dog in AKC obedience. Other than that I think hubby thought that to get the classic pretty/handsome boxer it had to be purebred. I have always wanted a shelter dog. So we are looking more that route now. I told hubby about the beautiful boxer girl on tri county and he looked this morning and she is not on there anymore :( we will prob call anyways and see if maybe they took her off the strays page to put on the shelter page..I have a feeling the beauty's owners picked her up though. We are going to make an appointment next week to look at some dogs at the Humane society of CC. They have some lovely dogs, no full boxers, but some lovely dogs anyways. What is most important is the temperment, that is my main love for the boxers. I love their personalities.

Adopt me please !
Boxy has been around the horses for almost a year now, and he STILL drools and acts like a nutcase every time they are in his sight (will run up and down the fence line wanting to go after them) - I don't think he will EVER get over the horses?! I am sure he would chase them if he had a chance.

Please contact me if you are interested in a tater. My son has agreed to allow me to find him a new home, but it has to be a great home. We love this guy! He is great with kids and my other dogs. He is not neutered, but i suggest he be neutered. UTD on shots. Sweet boy. He is 3. House/create trained. Loves his toys and loves to play.
